Also had tickle bees (no sting) you could catch in your hand, and cool little clouds of lightening bugs that would come out at dusk.

Hardly see any of those anymore. Where did they go?
If you have them every year, then they are not cicadas. They come out in 7 and 12 year waves. It's what makes them cicadas.

    It's these guys

A "7-year cicada" means it is 7 years from the time they are laid - not that they come in 7-year waves.

In other words, eggs laid this summer emerge in 2024, eggs laid next summer emerge in 2025, etc.

"periodic" cicadas spend most of their lives underground as nymphs (i.e. 7 or 12 years), then they emerge as the winged BB targets we are familiar with.

catching one that was busting out of his nymph shell was fun.

tying a Black Cat firecracker on one and send it on a drone mission was a good time, also lol

Well that's cool. we don't have any annuals around here, at all. It's either a mega-wave, or nothing at all. Learn something every day!

Palmetto bug sounds nicer than tree roaches, lol. I hate 'em, too. I even hate to kill 'em because they crunch and squirt. I hate crunchy bugs and I hate squirters but the crunchy squirters are the most grossest, nastiest, filthiest, creatures to crawl the earth. *shudders*
