Obama administration proposes allowing tolls on federal interstate highways

How many times do we get to pay for the same roads? Would this be the third? Original cost to build paid by tax dollars, gas taxes pay for road maintenance, now tolls to pay for it again?

    http://www.washingtonpost.com/local/...1f4_story.html

With pressure mounting to avert a transportation funding crisis this summer, the Obama administration Tuesday opened the door for states to collect tolls on interstate highways to raise revenue for roadway repairs.

The proposal, contained in a four-year, $302 billion White House transportation bill, would reverse a long-standing federal prohibition on most interstate tolling.

How much will it cost to build the tollbooths?

This is to create a control grid.

Bingo! Electronic toll passes will be installed and there will be no toll takers to pay the toll. The electronic toll pass has an RFID in them so they will also be able to track your whereabouts in real time.

Without the government, who will build the roads, tax us to pay for them, then sell them to a private company to charge us to use them? I mean, if you anarchists have a better solution, I'd like to hear it!

Quite likely since it would track driving habits and locations. Freedom of movement something somethingsomething.....

If I have to pay to travel between states on a federal road, do I still have freedom of movement?

Or they will simply install license plate readers and send you the bill like they do in Austin. No need for intrusive RFID's. Why fuss with a political hot potato when they can monitor you without one?

the sad thing is >>> They work great. I've never not received a bill.

This may also fit in with the push to remove gas taxes and replace it with GPS pay-by-the-mile schemes.

eta: Also how to force people to maintain registration (property taxes and registration fees) of their cars if they want to drive anywhere. Everything coming down the pipe is about forcing more and more money out of your pocket until you're nearly penniless and living at the complete whim of gov't.

Yeah, you'll be given the choice of stopping every 10 miles and carrying a Brinks bag of quarters with you or equipping your car with a fancy radio / GPS device that will allow the Feds to track your every move.

Control grid gets a little tighter....

I completely support this. Those who use the interstate system should be the ones paying for it.

It's like I've been wondering. How many of the assets that are suppose to be held in public trust for us all are really still ours.

I know if I counterfeited the entire money supply at least thirty times over in the last fifty years people would start noticing some of their stuff on my side of the property line. Even the stuff you had your hot little hands clutching YOUR deeds tightly on do you really have any say any longer to what goes down?

Obama is obviously trolling us. This is exactly what the libertarians have wanted for years and years. We all know that the liberals think it is a dumb idea that will keep poor people from being able to travel.
    * Enforce Border Security – America should be guarding her own borders and enforcing her own laws instead of policing the world and implementing UN mandates.

    * No Amnesty - The Obama Administration’s endorsement of so-called “Comprehensive Immigration Reform,” granting amnesty to millions of illegal immigrants, will only encourage more law-breaking.

    * Abolish the Welfare State – Taxpayers cannot continue to pay the high costs to sustain this powerful incentive for illegal immigration. As Milton Friedman famously said, you can’t have open borders and a welfare state.

    * End Birthright Citizenship – As long as illegal immigrants know their children born here will be granted U.S. citizenship, we’ll never be able to control our immigration problem.

Actually any toll monies would go to the states according to the article.

opened the door for states to collect tolls on interstate highways to raise revenue for roadway repairs.
States are responsible for the upkeep of the sections which pass through their states. Otherwise the money has to come from their general funds. A toll would put the costs of maintaining the roads on those who actually use them rather than taxing everybody in the state whether they use them or not.

Thing is, we know that gov'ts never repeal a tax after enactment. Just doesn't happen. It's conceivable to expect that there will be gas taxes, mileage taxes AND toll road taxes in addition to your property taxes, registration fees, etc. Bleed you dry is the name of the game.

When in history has it ever worked out like that? Allow the states to put in tolls on the roads and those who use them will pay the costs sure, but everybody else will pay the cost too, because general revenue taxes sure as heck aren't going to go down. It is the same problem as the Fair Tax. Sounds nice in theory, but the reality of government is that it will try to max out every tax revenue stream available to it.
