Amari, minister in charge of Trans-Pacific Partnership trade talks, admitted that no problems had been completely solved over the issue of market access for agricultural products and autos, which remained the biggest sticking points." Ministers from the 12 negotiating members are now arranging a plenary meeting in May in Singapore, people familiar with the matter said earlier. But trade observers say little progress is expected there unless Tokyo and Washington -- which together account for some 80 percent of combined gross domestic product in the TPP -- move closer.
Amari reiterated on Friday that Japan and the United States are not setting a specific goal for reaching a deal. It is widely seen, however, that TPP negotiations could lose momentum unless major progress is seen before the U.S. midterm election in November.
