It’s Legal to Sell Pot in Colorado, But Not If You’re in 4th Grade

DENVER – Two Colorado fourth graders were busted for selling marijuana at their elementary school, prompting officials today to urge adults to keep their weed locked away from kids.
School officials said a 10-year-old fourth grade boy brought a small quantity of leafy marijuana to Monfort Elementary School in Greeley, Colorado, on Monday.
“He sold it to three other fourth graders on the school playground, which resulted in a profit to the young man of $11,” John Gates, director of safety and security for the Greeley-Evans School District, told ABC News.
The next day, Gates said one of the three young buyers brought a marijuana edible to school and gave it to the boy who sold the pot on Monday. That boy took a bite, but did not suffer any ill effects, Gates said.
Both boys apparently got the weed from relatives, according to Gates.
“Both of these kids took the marijuana without the consent of their grandparents,” said Gates.
Gates said the four students involved will be suspended for a “significant” number of days, but declined to say exactly how long the punishment would be. Initially police were called, but officials have determined the incident will not he handled as a criminal matter, he said.
“We hope to send a good message here without ruining anybody’s lives. The message we really want to get out here to the adults is, ‘for crying out loud, secure it,’” Gates said.
Adults 21 and older have been able to buy recreational marijuana legally in Colorado since Jan. 1.
In a letter sent home to parents, Monfort Elementary School Principal Jennifer Sheldon said no student was injured.
“We know that many adults have greater access to marijuana since the change in the drug’s legal status in Colorado,” Sheldon wrote. “We urge all parents, grandparents and anyone who cares for children to treat marijuana as you would prescription drugs, alcohol or even firearms. This drug is potentially lethal to children, and should always be kept under lock and key, away from young people.”
The side effects of edible marijuana – which can be far more potent than smoking a joint – have been raising new concerns after two recent deaths in Colorado. In one, a 19-year old college student died when he jumped off a hotel balcony after eating a marijuana-laced cookie. In the second, Richard Kirk, 47, was charged with shooting and killing his wife while she called 9-1-1, telling police her husband had consumed pot-infused candy.
Colorado’s legislature is currently considering new safety regulations for marijuana edibles, including bills requiring stronger warning labels and lowering the amount of THC permitted in food.

Young adults who smoke marijuana may be at risk for serious or even fatal heart problems, according to a study by French researchers on Wednesday.
The findings in the Journal of the American Heart Association raises new concerns about the safety of marijuana, just as many parts of the world are relaxing laws on its use and medicinal marijuana is gaining popularity for treating certain health conditions.
The risk of heart complications appeared small in the study, which included nearly 2,000 people who sought medical attention for complications related to marijuana from 2006 to 2010.
Of those, two percent, or 35 people, had heart attacks or circulation problems related to arteries in the brain and limbs.
Of greater concern was the high death rate. One in four of the patients with cardiovascular complications died, said the researchers.
The analysis also found that the percentage of reported cardiovascular complications more than tripled from 2006 to 2010.
"The general public thinks marijuana is harmless, but information revealing the potential health dangers of marijuana use needs to be disseminated to the public, policymakers and healthcare providers," said lead author Emilie Jouanjus, a medical faculty member at the Centre Hospitalier Universitaire de Toulouse in Toulouse, France.
"There is now compelling evidence on the growing risk of marijuana-associated adverse cardiovascular effects, especially in young people," Jouanjus said.
Doctors should be aware of the heart risks and consider marijuana use as a potential contributor to cardiovascular disease in some patients, said Jouanjus.
People with pre-existing conditions appeared most vulnerable, the study added.
Valentin Fuster, director of Mount Sinai Heart and Physician-in-Chief of The Mount Sinai Hospital, said the study appeared to support some observations he has made at his own clinic in New York City.
"I am concerned about cannabis because we are running a clinic of young people who come to us with coronary artery disease. I have seen a number of cases in whom I was not able to identify any other risk other than the use of cannabis," said Fuster, who was not involved in the research.
"So I think this registry in France supports the issue that cannabis is not free of danger," he added.
"I am not sure if it is more risky than tobacco cigarette smoking or less, but one thing is clear, it's affecting young people."
Allen Taylor, professor of medicine at Georgetown University School of Medicine, said the overall risk of heart problems from marijuana remains unclear.
"This study shows a some preliminary evidence of cardiovascular harm from marijuana but isn't conclusive. The study's limitations are important in that we can't know how high the risk is, just that there is a signal of risk between marijuana smoking and heart troubles," he said.
Taylor added that more research needs to be done to assess the risks posed by marijuana.
"It is a shame that we simply don't know more about a substance that potentially carries the risk of serious bodily harm. It seems that public perception is ahead of the science. We should remain open to the scientific facts as they evolve."

Drudge has been trying to scare people sensationalizing war like headlines between the US,UK vs Russia. Yet people here are upset over stories that spell out legitimate concerns over children use and access to marijuana in a state that just legalized it.

Of course it is going to be easier for children to get their hands on it in a state that just legalized it and that there are medical concerns for minors. Valid reporting.

Hopefully they learned to be more discrete in their dealings. The lesson here is that even though it's legal you still need to operate on the DL or people will get up in your business.

You just know that if a significant amount of money was changing hands you would get the politicians involved looking to take the opportunity to teach the little ones about taxes and what percent of your money needs to be stolen by the government.

Obvious fact, weed was harder to buy before it became legal. So no surprise it is getting into the hands of kids more so now than it did before and therefore stories like this. That does not mean there is some grand conspiracy by the newspaper to ban weed for reporting on it.

In essence what you're alluding to is that people who only ingest weed now that it's legal are more likely to leave it accessible to children..

Tell you what. Why don't you go back and search the news archives for similar stories prior to the ban being lifted.
4th graders were trying to sell pot plenty back then, and they were getting busted plenty back then, so it shouldn't be hard.

When you can show that there was similar reporting on this issue prior to legalization, I'll believe this isn't an effort to shut it down.
