Up to 1 Million New Yorkers Ignore SAFE Act Registration Deadline

"We can’t have an American people that violate the law and then just walk away from it."

    Yes We Can!

Second Amendment and gun-rights activists loudly objected to New York’s legislative mandate that they register all “assault weapons” by Tuesday.

“Nobody is going to comply with this,” Tim Swedenhjelm told the Buffalo News of the looming SAFE Act provision deadline. “We don’t call them ‘assault rifles’ because they’re not ‘assault rifles.’ Assault rifles are automatic weapons. These are not automatic weapons. When I hear politicians call them assault rifles, you know they don’t know what they’re talking about.”

Erie County Sheriff Timothy B. Howard told the News that he would not require his deputies to enforce the requirement.

“I am not encouraging them to do it,” he said. “At the same time, their own consciences should be their guide.”
    [....]
“There’s a lot of hyperbole and misinformation floating around,” New Yorkers Against Gun Violence’s executive director, Leah Gunn Barrett, stated. “People who owned these weapons before Jan. 15, 2013, can keep them. All they need to do is register them. It is painless, easy and costs nothing.”

But gun-rights proponents scoffed at such reasoning.

“We believe the law is not just, it is not the government’s business,” said Lisa Donovan, spokeswoman for NY2A, or the New York 2nd Amendment Coalition. “Registration is confiscation.”

    Plenty of others agree.

“They have been shredding the Constitution for years,” said tea party activist Rus Thompson, who led a rally of about 70 protesters in front of Buffalo’s Mahoney State Office Building.

With demonstrators busy shredding gun registration forms in front of news cameras, Thompson added, “You shred the Constitution, we’ll shred any form you want us to fill out. They can’t arrest a million people. What are they going to do?”
Republican State Assemblyman David Di-Pietro offered a sober assessment of the registration provision.

“From talking to gun dealers, gun-owners and gun advocates, it is estimated that there are more than 1 million assault-type guns in the state,” he said at a Monday rally in Springville, according to the Buffalo News. “We estimate that less than 10 percent of the owners of these guns will comply with the registration.
h/t Claire Wolfe: I’ve been trying to find out how many New Yorkers dutifully lined up by yesterday’s deadline to get their yellow Star of David badges “assault weapon” registration forms. New York officials aren’t telling. Unofficial estimates are interesting.
Based on the idea of natural rights, government secures those rights to the individual by strictly negative intervention, making justice costless and easy of access; and beyond that it does not go. The State, on the other hand, both in its genesis and by its primary intention, is purely anti-social. It is not based on the idea of natural rights, but on the idea that the individual has no rights except those that the State may provisionally grant him. It has always made justice costly and difficult of access, and has invariably held itself above justice and common morality whenever it could advantage itself by so doing.

Is this not a DOUBLY ironic name?

Small prediction: the article quotes one as saying "they can't arrest a million people".

They do not have to. I suspect we will see a small number of very high profile prosecutions, the convictions for which will carry staggering sentencing in the assumption that putting someone into a penitentiary for 1000 years worth of consecutive sentences will scare the rest into taking advantage of the "amnesty" drives to be offered. "Turn your illegal assault weapon in next Monday and no questions will be asked." That stands to work well, perhaps especially after the second or third round of truly horrific sentences are handed down.

Another possibility could be a return of the death penalty for possessing an "assault weapon". Sounds completely and insanely unlikely, right? Thirty years ago the same would have been said about PATRIOT and NDAA, just to name two currently effective sets of statutes. "Turn your assault weapons in this coming Wednesday and avoid the possibility of receiving the death penalty for possessing such weapons." Don't dismiss this out of hand. Being armed is a BIG DEAL to Themme and I believe it is big enough that they might well try such a stunt. Imagine the first several executions. Imagine Themme televising the events. More insanity that could not happen here? May want to re-check that.

Unless Theye have immediately at hand other practical means of rendering us ineffective at resisting their will, the day IS going to come where they will be faced with the choice of backing down or pressing the issue of mundanes with firearms, and Theye are not known for backing down, Bunkerville notwithstanding. In such a case the rest of us will be faced with a future-altering choice because there will be no middle ground options available. We will either kill them off or be subjugated. That is the ultimate position in which we shall all find ourselves, given the aforementioned absence of super-instrumentality. They are attempting to get their way in dribs and drabs and a goodly number of us are not buying. Ultimately Theye will have to drop the hammer or walk away. I do not see Themme as the sort to demur. Therefore, it behooves all men with any pretensions of a love of freedom to prepare accordingly because as things currently stand, a battle for the future is inevitable.

Sounds familiar. If you like your guns, you can keep your guns.

This is truly how it seems - Theye are pushing and pushing because I believe they are convinced they will win no matter how we respond. If we continue to demur, Theye will eventually accomplish their goal in piecemeal fashion. If we start shooting, Theye then see themselves as holding the pretext for all-out war against us.

At this point, and I hope this changes, I see zero chance for a political solution. All of the indicators suggest my assessment is correct: no matter what we do, what we say, or how we argue, we are ignored. Take from that what you will.

The committed communist / socialist / leftist / progressive (but I repeat myself) firmly believes that time is on their side. As long as such intolerable acts remain on the books, they are correct. Our children and grandchildren will be brainwashed by institutions they control, so that future generations be will no longer be able to keep and bear arms, and our arms will be turned in by our descendants and destroyed along with their liberty.

Thus, this must be fought and fought soonest.
Out of every one hundred men they send us, ten should not even be here. Eighty will do nothing but serve as targets for the enemy. Nine are real fighters, and we are lucky to have them, upon them depends our success in battle. But one, ah the one, he is a real warrior, and he will bring the others back from battle alive.

Duty is the most sublime word in the English language. Do your duty in all things. You can not do more than your duty. You should never wish to do less than your duty.

The fundamental incoherency of many liberty people has always been their asserting that "we are radically committed to pure liberty, and know the current system is statist and corrupt," but also "we can restore freedom solely through reform of the current system." Circa 1776, this would be the equivalent of saying "give me liberty or give me death" followed by "let's settle our differences with the Crown peaceably in a British court." Logically we know the statism is baked in to the cake of the current system, but emotionally there is a desire to believe that system can undo itself being rigged.

Too many want a 'respectable' way out of the current mess, one that does not cost us to pledge "our Lives, our Fortunes, and our Sacred Honor" in the process. The revolution didn't work that way, and neither will the battle in the near future. But from the people at Bundy's ranch standing their ground, to a million New Yorkers non-complying with an un-Constitutional law (and a police force that has said it will not enforce much of it), more Americans are voicing the true "give me liberty" line in the sand, and not caring about looking 'crazy' or lawless in the process, despite decades of brainwashing efforts. Yes, things look bleak, but there is hope as well.

Agreed. People such as Obama and the great majority of our members of Congress, along with all the thousands of petty tyrants from state legislators to city council members and the like need to be stopped in the most unequivocally material fashion. This includes neutralization of their willing agents and other instruments. I would like to think that threats will do the trick but I can no longer believe that. We are very much at a point where the sword is the only likely remedy at our disposal. So long as we attempt to work solely "within the system" we acknowledge the legitimacy of that system and that will lead us nowhere but into the hands of doom.

Consider the recent Bunkerville affair. Silly people are crowing about the great victory that has been stricken for liberty. It takes a special brand of psychotic to sign onto that bandwagon. Had a shooting battle broken out and the "protesters" removed every federal agent present from the roles of the living, we would have taken but the first, tiniest, and most tentative step toward the reassertion of our proper rights. Nothing of the sort happened. All they managed was to telegraph the loud and clear message to the Man that he needs a bigger hammer, and rest you assured that in time he will return with one. Then we will see the cloth from which the parties in question are more truly cut.

Jumping up and down and mooing like the ape-men of "2001: A Space Odyssey" cuts no worthy mustard. It was not until that first hirsute guy picked up a large leg bone and beat his tormentor to death that men began twigging to the knowledge of what it means to be truly free from the tyrannies of his fellow apes. It is no longer considered fashionable, but the hard and cold truth is this: those who unrelentingly trespass against you need killing and nothing less. The Righteous Man makes clear to a would-be trespasser that he cedes him no right whatsoever. After that, onus rests with his fellows to take seriously the declaration. If they do not, the Righteous Man stands in the perfect geometric center of moral rectitude and unbreakably correct reason when he kills the life out of those who incorrigably trespass against him, regardless of manner or degree. Violation is violation in all cases - something to which not one of us is entitled to foist upon another, nor obliged to tolerate. The Righteous Man owes the tyrant NOTHING better than this: to be his deadly foe and see the life drain away from those who choose the path that is failure itself. It is no fault of the Righteous Man that his enemy lay in a pool of his own blood; it is the fault of naught but those who choose the errant path.

It is time people started coming to their senses and dispensed with this great raft of dangerously psychotic "modern" thinking wherein the central presumption under which they labor is that they owe their fellow men their lives, their labor, their honor, their fealty, their blind and unflinching obedience. This is the most profoundly rank insanity of all human history and it underpins every Empire one may care to name, the only differences being the words used and the degrees to which the slaves were held to the imposed precepts of cracked thought.

The great majority of us now appear to hold this tolerance of the predations of one's fellows upon him on high as if it were some grand virtue; a duty. One of the most mind bending tacit presumptions is that such tolerance is a sign of being morally/spiritually "evolved". What shrieking, frothing-at-the-rabid-mouth insanity this is! Rather, it is the sign of the most profound crimson psychosis - an utter departure from reality wherein the standards of perception have been lifted from Planet Bizarro and made one's own here on earth. Everything is purely and predictably BACKWARD.

We're in some fine shape here, oh yeah.

I could see them coming up with some sort of really high gun tax premium as a gotcha to these people who are grandfathered into being allowed to keep their guns.
