38M gallons of water dumped after teen caught urinating in reservoir

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Once again, Portland officials are preparing to flush millions of gallons of treated water because a young person urinated into a city reservoir.

Water Bureau Administrator David Shaff said 38 million gallons will be discarded because a 19-year-old was caught in the act on Wednesday.

Three years ago, the city drained a 7.5 million-gallon reservoir.

The open reservoirs hold water that's already been treated and goes directly into mains for distribution to customers.

The urine poses little health risk, but city officials don't want customers to think the water's tainted.

What is the point of treating water and then letting it sit out in the open? Doesn't that defeat the purpose of treating it?
    No more IRS.

Yeah, that was my first thought. Who in the hell sets potable water out in the open outdoors for a while before sending it to your faucets. Are these people high?

Oh, LOL. Note to self, if ever in Portland, don't drink the tap water.

There is nothing wrong with letting it sit out in the open. That's the way it has traditionally been done and is perfectly safe, as even the idiots wasting all this perfectly safe water (in the middle of a drought) themselves acknowledge. So no, it does not defeat the purpose at all.

I think what is going on here is that corrupt local officials want to do away with the open reservoirs because it will necessitate hundreds of million in construction contracts as well as necessitating the steady purchase of a lot more chemicals to put in the water. And besides the kickbacks that entails, it also helps justify huge rate increases in public water costs that they want to push through.

Of course if they had said and done nothing and it came out, half the city would have been suing because they had typhoid.

City water has stuff much worse than piss in it.. Any city, Anywhere.
Liberty is lost through complacency and a subservient mindset. When we accept or even welcome automobile checkpoints, random searches, mandatory identification cards, and paramilitary police in our streets, we have lost a vital part of our American heritage. America was born of protest, revolution, and mistrust of government. Subservient societies neither maintain nor deserve freedom for long.

Why not just treat the water again instead of "throwing it out"?
