He was probably redistricted out of his seat. For some reason, Maine does redistricting two years after most states. This will be the last time Maine has this obscure reapportionment schedule. The next redistricting will occur in 2021 and every 10 years thereafter, aligning with congressional redistricting and with the practice in most states.

Really sad news He was able to win reelect in a strong Democrat wave so he stood a chance this year, even in a Democratic district.
