CNN says they are getting close to the pings (within kilometers). Still haven't actually found it yet though.

Hmm.....everything Ive seen says an airplane black box has enough battery power to last up to 30 days. How long ago did the plane disappear? This looks like a big ol distraction.

Australian search coordinator says it's not likely to be the black box.

Latest ping "not black box" but the search area has been reduced to "only" 18,000 square miles.
    http://www.cnn.com/2014/04/10/world/...irlines-plane/

The possible signal heard by a search plane was picked up through sonar buoys equipped to receive such electronic data and was detected near the Australian ship Ocean Shield, said the Joint Agency Coordination Centre.

The Australian Defense Force source said the signal detected was not at the 37.5 kHz frequency consistent with the pingers from flight data recorders but in a range that suggests strongly that it is from something that is man-made. Commodore Peter Leavy of the Royal Australian Navy said Wednesday in Perth that existing technology in RAAF P3 aircraft had been modified to allow the acoustic processor to pick up sounds in the frequency range. Using the technology in this way is experimental, according to the source.

The source said four RAAF P3 Orions have been modified with this technology, with the sonar buoys expiring and sinking about eight hours after they are deployed from the aircraft. On Wednesday, Leavy said that each P3 is capable of deploying 84 buoys, laid in a pattern or grid coordinated with the Ocean Shield.
Although Leavy said the buoys have sensors that can detect signals "at least" 1,000 feet below the surface, the source is confident that the technology has been tested at a "much deeper depth."

Crews have been narrowing the search area in the Indian Ocean.
There were no sightings reported by search aircraft or objects recovered by ships on Thursday, the Joint Agency Coordination Centre said.
Friday's search area was about 18,000 square miles (46,700 square kilometers), centered 1,436 miles (2,312 kilometers) northwest of Perth.
That's far smaller than the search area's size a few weeks ago.

"It's pretty incredible, if you look at where we started, which was virtually the entire Indian Ocean, now getting it down to what's essentially a couple hundred square miles (where the pings have been detected) is pretty miraculous," Marks said.

The Ocean Shield first picked up two sets of underwater pulses on Saturday that were of a frequency close to that used by the locator beacons. It heard nothing more until Tuesday, when it reacquired the signals twice. The four signals were within 17 miles of one another.

How many square miles is Diego Garcia? That's where they need to reduce their search coverage to.

That would be one long flight. Diego Garcia is basically the opposite direction from its flight path to Bejing. It flew about two hours that direction before it changed direction and disappeared- the flight was scheduled to be about eight hour so it was likely fueled for a flight that long. So then it turns around, has to back-track those two hours (now up to four hour flight time) and fly another about seven to eight hours to Diego Garcia- nearly eleven to twelve hours or almost 50% longer than their original flight plan. Would they have even had enough fuel for such a trip? Had they flown directly to Diego Garcia it would have been about the same flight time as the trip to Bejing and reachable but it didn't fly directly so we need to add in the extra distance it had already travelled.

    "Pings of Mass Distraction"?
    http://www.lewrockwell.com/lrc-blog/...s-distraction/
    Butler Shaffer (11 April 2014)

Is the script, re Flight 370, sounding familiar to anyone? Remember all the stories and factually-baseless theories about “weapons of mass destruction” that were on their way to New York City via hijacked airliners and suitcases; the mushroom cloud that was soon to appear above Times Square unless “we” start bombing Baghdad without hesitation or questioning? The current fear-object is a missing Boeing 777, whose speculated trail has been drawn and re-drawn on television so many times, and all without a single piece of hard evidence that a lawyer could introduce in court. Ahhh, but now there are “pings” which just might be from the missing plane – like the WMDs that were offered to the gullible to justify the attack on Iraq? – and an unnamed ”U.S. official” has reportedly expressed “confidence” that they are from Flight 370.

Will the source of the alleged “pings” ever be found, or will their fading voice be enough to satisfy Boobus that this is where the plane ended up? Will speculation serve in place of evidence? Is there anyone taking bets on whether the airliner will ever be brought to the surface, or whether photos of the plane will ever be shown? Or is the downed plane at such oceanic depths as to preclude the recovery of any genuine evidence – including the “black box”? Will the unnamed “U.S. official” ever be brought to the surface of this inquiry to be questioned, or is his/her role simply to stamp the establishment’s imprimatur of the explanation to which all “responsible” men and women are expected to conform their thinking? And why is the U.S. – along with the FBI – so involved in the search for a Malaysian plane flying from Malaysia to China with mostly Chinese passengers aboard?

I have no factually-grounded explanations – or even suspicions – as to why this plane simply disappeared, nor am I disposed to making up any reasons. I am more inclined to asking questions. I do find it of interest to recall that so-called “intelligence” agencies were unable to learn of the schemes for the attacks of 9/11 just prior to that date but, within hours after, had photographs of the 19 alleged criminals who carried them out. If we are to ever learn of the fate of the 239 aboard Flight 370, we may have to await the inquiries of real journalists, whose publication of the truths underlying corporate-state policies and behavior continue to terrorize the political power structure.

The whole thing is odd, and I said the one guy's explanation of the "shadow" theory made a lot of sense, if the plane wasn't just flown into the ocean somewhere by the pilot(s) or a passenger(s). I don't believe it was an accident, at all. Too many turns, with no radio call for help. Transponder(s) being turned off, etc.

As for Diego Garcia being a possible place it could have gone, those are things like "How much fuel did it have?" would answer easily. It was originally in the "projected path" of airports it supposedly could have made it to, so I guess it was/is a possibility. Even now with the U.S. government denying it (which, makes it more likely to be true, right? )

Which, I do find odd the guy said no indication if flew near the Maldives, when there were reports of the fishermen/residents saying they spotted a low flying plane early in the morning. I don't know, again, the whole thing is odd.

Did you see the "shadow theory" though? It was definitely the most interesting, and well thought out one, outside of it just crashing in the ocean. Based on the early information that was known and reported.

Unless, it's simply at the bottom of the ocean.

Flying over the Maldives and then to Diego Garcia would add even more mileage and time to the flight. Maldives would be out of the way and not make any sense if you were going to Diego Garcia.

It bothers the heck out of me that many in the media, many politicians and many in general, assume that this missing flight was caused by nefarious actions, without any proof. Bureaucrats and politicians are using this tragedy to implement more "security" measures. Ethical scientists use evidence to test their theory. Lawyers use evidence or lack there of to reaffirm their claim regardless of the truth. It's not surprising that many politicians are lawyers. It's not surprising that government agencies use a tragedy to futher their agenda.

Yeah, again, not sure how much fuel was/wasn't in the plane. And I would like to think they aren't just searching where they are for no reason, and are looking based on the actual satellite pings as reported.

BUT, if it was spotted over Maldives as was initially reported (but then said to not be true), maybe he was heading to Somalia...to join the pirates?

They was no plane, no passengers, witnesses its all crisis actors it is situation normal. Please go back to sleep.
