    Privatize Outer Space!

    Bob Murphy (28 March 2014)

“The Planetary Society” is trying to whip up public action in the United States to pressure the federal government to restore spending programs for NASA. The website tells the reader, “For decades, Jupiter’s moon Europa has cried out for exploration. Its large ocean may be one of the most habitable places in the solar system.” In the sample email that the visitor to the site is encouraged to send to policymakers, one of the specific items it requests is: “Restore NASA’s Planetary Science Division to its historical level of $1.5 billion per year so it can maintain a balanced program of exploration as described by the National Research Council’s Planetary Science Decadal Survey.”

Yet the best way to promote space exploration and genuinely beneficial scientific research is to privatize the whole enterprise. As a first pass, note that we must always consider the opportunity cost of resources devoted to space travel. It is probably true that private investors never would have financed the Apollo moon shot in the 1960s, but that’s because it represented an inefficient use of resources (given the policy backdrop and state of the economy).

Bastiat’s famous admonition to look at both the seen and the unseen applies just as much to grandiose space projects as it does to, say, sports stadiums: It’s not enough to ask, “Would humans benefit from a mission to Europa, if it were a free gift?” Rather, the question is, “Would humans benefit more from a mission to Europa, versus the best possible alternative use of the resources such a mission would require?”

    [... more at link ...]

[...] I claim that if the government would simply get out of the way and remove legal and regulatory roadblocks to private space efforts, then humans will reach other planets in a much more sensible and sustainable fashion. Think of it this way: Yes, the United States government was able to put a flag on the moon and collect a few rocks, decades before a private venture would have done so. But after the photo ops, what came of it? The moon’s potential will be realized only when companies operating in the private sector find ways of profitably sending people there.

To "Privatize Space" we must first assume the government owns it and can then sell it to somebody.

Private firms are getting into the rocket and space transportation field. Of course governments (and not just the US government) are their biggest customers so far.

What if the private company lands on Mars, and the members of the company declare they are forming a new nation themselves? It'll be like some Total Recall $#@!.

This is a very, very important and timely thing to acknowledge. I was going to start a thread on it but wanted to see what the narrative was going to be from some representatives regarding these sanctions against Russia. Maybe tomorrow. And, really, it doesn't have much to do with exploration. We're quickly approaching the point in which some folks in Washington who are calling for sanctions on Russia for what amounts to a short term gain are going to be left extremely red faced.

I think we'll see several countries start to throw money into their "space programs". The sloppy use of the term "privatized" that we see here in the states creates confusion though because, again, we're not talking about exploration. Maybe the op is but that's not what we should be discussing in terms of what "privatizing" space truly means given recent developments. You know, gone are the days when the superior navy accrued reserves. Nope. International finance clearing is now digital. It's done in "space". But there's a lot to this and it's going to come quick. Russia is already developing it's internal networks of clearing after this thing with western credit card companies and we see what is happening with gas lines through China. Some other nations will jump on that bandwagon and when it's all over nobody will be trading dollars. Now that's just a quick scribble though. I'll spell it out a little better tomorrow, I suppose.

But, yes. Space programs are going to be moving fast all over the world. They already are actually. Aside from all of this, it's important to note that the bulk of the spying via intelligence agencies is done on nations and their business transactions. Now, sure, some politicians want to avoid that reality and try to keep the narrative focused on domestic affairs but it's way bigger than that.

Going to make a coin, that pays miners in acres on mars. The coins won't be divisible like other coins though, and each new coin will be tied to a specific grid coordinate. Now, crypto will be back by LAND!!!

Indivisible, eh? No change back. One banana = one acre of land. One new car- one acre of land. Maybe two. Not terribly useful money.

Okay, it's divisible. Now, have to launch Universe Coin. Decided also not to limit to mars, but any mass other than earth that has been mapped sufficient to determine available land area.

    I estimate the coin to be worth 10000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000 00000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000 00000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000 00000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000 00000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000 00000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000 00000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000 00000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000 00000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000 00000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000 00000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000 00000000000000000000000000000 dollars.

There's no freedom left on this rock, so it makes sense to attempt to get up off it.

Space mining will be the single largest leap in industrial capability, in the history of mankind.

The resources that are in space are effectively infinite.

It does mean however, in the long term, living in space... and not Earth

I actually own space. I have however granted an unlimited license to Elon Musk, in exchange for Twitter memes.

He is holding up his end of the bargain.

This statement is more true now than it was 8 years ago.

This isn't specifically about space programs per se.

It's about "moonshot"-style projects in general (which, of course, includes space programs, but is not limited to them).
