This is an explanation from a German on another site:
The Großer Zapfenstreich is a military tradition to honor important persons or in the case of the afghanistan war to honor the entire militaryforces deployed there (was a first timer) normaly the Zapfenstreich basically just means that now is time to sleep for soldiers back in the days of the Landsknechte (lansquenet) they officer used to go around witha torch and tell everyone he needs to sleep now.
since 1836 when the tsar was honored in berlin by the prussian king there was the Großer zapfenstreich (groß meaning big) it always is done after sun set and its kind of a military cermony the honor battalion goes around in cricles etc. and then the music corp plays some traditonal marches and calssical pieces etc and some music the honored person chose themselves.
It requires high percision etc. but because today many germans are pretty anti military etc. many associate this tradition with the nazis.
