    But even back when I was still a minimal statist (minarchist) I understood that protectionist tariffs are always a very, very bad idea. Back then I would have supported low flat across the board tariffs in order to support the "necessary" functions of a minimal state, but never protectionist tariffs.

    Since I've learned that, as Neil Smith once said, there are only 2 kinds of things that government does: things that could be done better, cheaper and more efficiently by the free market, and things that shouldn't be done at all.
