What the NRA Doesn't Want You to Know

Dr. Vivek Murthy is a well-regarded physician and instructor at Harvard Medical School. Like the president he hopes to serve as surgeon general, he supports greater regulation of firearms. That said, the surgeon general has no role in regulating guns, a task that falls to the perennially underfunded and legislatively hobbled Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

So why are the National Rifle Association and its allies in the extreme gun-rights movement so panicked about Murthy? “The surgeon general has the important tasks of providing the American public with information to better inform decisions related to their health and directing much of the federal government’s public health efforts,” says the NRA’s lobbying arm on its website.

The crucial words are “information” and “public health.” The extreme gun-rights movement makes expansive claims about the benefits of gun ownership. Few of these pass even the crudest standards of scholarship. Indeed, many such claims are already bending under the weight of public health research indicating, for example, that gun ownership may be more likely to lead to instances of suicide or homicide than self-defense.

Better research is needed on the relationship between guns and public health. The NRA, however, cannot abide more research. What if professional, peer-reviewed science exposes many of the gun groups’ claims as nonsense?

Of course, the business of fear mongering can advance even as ignorance recedes. But over the past two decades the NRA has made it abundantly clear that it views quality research as a threat to its agenda.

The politics of guns is often a stage for cowardice. Informed, data-driven discussion of public health has the potential to undermine attempts to spread fear. That’s why the NRA wants that discussion—and President Obama’s surgeon general nominee—muzzled before it gets any further.

I found this article interesting. It mentions how his anti-firearms stance developed.

Even if the NRA was trying to cover stuff up, it's not like gun control advocates haven't done the same. The whole game is a sham with no real winners, only further restrictions on our liberty. Wish people would wake up that guns don't encourage murder anymore than owning a kitchen knife does. Millions of guns in the hands of millions of people in the United States, yet we're not all out murdering each other.

    Pisses me off.

Numbers, is that only what this is all about, we are arguing over damned numbers?

Well then, if it numbers you want, how about these numbers:

    • 38,325 DIE every year in America from drug related overdoses (30,006 are determined to have been intential SUICIDES); and another 2,463,020 are treated in hospital ER’ for drug abuse
    • Smoking related illness: 480,000 DEAD
    • Abortions: 266,000 DEAD
    • Accidental mishaps: 120,859 DEAD
    • Automotive collisions: 33,687 DEAD
    • Falling: 26,009 DEAD
    • Poisoning: 33,041 DEAD
    • Medical error: 195,000 DEAD
    • Heart disease: 597,689 DEAD
    • Cancer: 574,743 DEAD
    • Diabetes: 69,071 DEAD
    • Knifings/stabbings: 1,694 DEAD
    • Blunt weapons: 496 DEAD
    • Physical battery: 728 DEAD
    • Arson/Fire: 75 DEAD
    • Train collisions: 250 DEAD
    • Miscellaneous, including drownings: 1,088 DEAD
    • In England and Wales 270 of its 770 HOMICIDES were attributed to KNIFE attacks (combined est. population: 56.6 million)

Again compare the above against firearm related DEATHS: 8,583 (a figure which has steadily decreased by 49% since its 1993 peak); meanwhile firearms are used in SELF-DEFENSE respectively 2,500,000 times a year throughout America. No, this is about the right to self-preservation and not whatsoever about damned numbers. And that is what this rag-publication called Newsweek “doesn’t want you to know”. Lest we forget We Need to Talk About Death (“the Case for Killing Granny”)

    * Justified Homicide by firearm (citizen): 201
    * Justified Homicide by firearm (law enforcement): 390

Like the president he hopes to serve as surgeon general,
TIL Obama served as the surgeon general.
Also, in a population of 300+million some people die every year.

I saw a billboard near Fenway in Boston during St. Pats weekend it said "Assault rifle have stopping power, fortunately so does your vote. Numbers of Americans killed since Sandy Hook massacre 40,000" <--paraphrase

How misleading is that! 40,000 people dead..trying to insinuate that 40k have been kille dby assault rifles is the most ridiculous statement I've heard since the last presidential race.

    Guns cause suicide? Really?

Sounds like we need to correlate suicide to pharmaceutical use. Nothing shuts up gun grabbers like comparing their little numbers to the huge numbers associated with those Big Pharma toxins.

Now we have some numbers that stand up.

Of course, they're talking about Iraq and Afghanistan. Shall we ban imperialism?

First, I would recommend the OP break the link to the odious anti-gun article. No sense in giving them any free traffic.

Second, there HAS been quality research done in the areas cited. If anyone or any organization has managed to discredit John Lott's extensive works, for instance, I have yet to hear about it.

Third, as far as misleading statistics go, it has already been clearly demonstrated that the virulently anti-gun left pads its statistics when presenting "news" stories about children and gun deaths. "Children" in this case are defined as being anyone under the age of twenty years old, and may include those who were shot during gang activities and other criminal endeavors. See this recent debunking of an ABC news article for evidence:

Fourth, if the NRA has any fault at all, it's that they never actively go after these demagogs and purveyors of misinformation. Groups like Gun Owners of America are quick to call out these charlatans as the frauds and shills they really are.

Though, to be fair, at least of few of those firearm related child fatalities are caused by LEO’ SWAT style raids.

And forget the NRA, it was long ago co-oped, the GOA, SAC, and SAF is where our arms protection really is at.

On this board, you are going to have to do better than shill Brady bunch talking points.
Out of every one hundred men they send us, ten should not even be here. Eighty will do nothing but serve as targets for the enemy. Nine are real fighters, and we are lucky to have them, upon them depends our success in battle. But one, ah the one, he is a real warrior, and he will bring the others back from battle alive.

No, I could see that being the case.
Every time anyone in the Obama administration presses the gun control issue, gun sales explode. In a way that the federal government would need a major war (like Nam or bigger) to reproduce by itself.

So they must have figured this out. And since the NRA clearly doesn't support gun rights, all they need to do is toe the line they're already toeing and leave the individuals in this country with the correct impression that the NRA really isn't going to fight gun control.

So the gun sales explode, and then the 2nd-stringers show up and do things like win DC V. Heller and stop the gun grabbers in their tracks.

If the NRA ever did decide that they were actually in favor of gun rights, they could kill gun grabbing bills before they ever became news, and then the frenzies wouldn't happen.
There are no crimes against people.
There are only crimes against the state.
And the state will never, ever choose to hold accountable its agents, because a thing can not commit a crime against itself.
