Thread: Where do you buy your movies?

Where do you buy your movies?

Okay, I'm giving up on the library. They buy their movies from walmart and dollar general, so they're really crummy. Their DVDs skip tracks the way I used to skip school. I've seen all the good ones from the library anyway. They flubbed up my request recently. And--to top it off--I don't even believe that public libraries should exist any more.

Where do you buy movies? I know the usual places, so I can look into those. Would rather own than rent. Don't want to do anything hi tech cause I'm a luddite. VHS is fine, but I'll take DVD. Any clubs like those penny record clubs that existed years ago? How about some groups of people who would exchange with you? You know, like some kind of groupie library.

I want to get some things like Clockwork Orange, Soylent Green, original Rollberball, Born on the Fourth of July, Open your Eyes, A Shock to the System, The Man Who Would be King, and some others.

Oh yeah, I went to the pawn shop. The employees acted like asswipes, so that's out.

Hmmm; looks like Ebay might be my best bet. The flea market opens a in few hours. Maybe the hillbillies have something good on the shelf.

    Netflix. It's $8 a month.

Goodwill usually has some. I don't pay much attention to them though, I'm looking for books.

Netflix is a bargain for eight bucks a month. Granted, the movie selections are kind of paltry, but there's a TON of television stuff, both old and new series and the like.

If it absolutely, positively has to be movies, you might check out the Walmart/VUDU movie selection. You can purchase movies for unlimited viewing for about the same cost as buying a DVD, or rent for between $2 to $5.

If you have a Redbox in your area, that's always a cheap option. Set up an online account with them and you can reserve movies ahead of time and check the inventory of your nearest Redboxes from home, online.

Then, of course, there's always Google Play. Costs about the same as Walmart/VUDU as near as I can tell.

I've used all those services and haven't had any problems so far.

I use my GF's account. She's paying anyway and doesn't care

You can have up to 3 people watching at the same time on the same account and password.

Looks like VHS was a much better find than DVD. The Goodwill Store sells them for 75 cent. Some even still in the wrapper. Got a few DVDs from there for 1.50, but mostly VHS.

Okay, now to brag about my good finds.

Alfred Hitchcock. 20 movies on 4 CDs for $1.50 total. Practically untouched. Only watched Rich and Strange from 1931 so far. Good stuff. Also has The Man Who Knew Too Much. Have not seen that one yet.

Psycho. A VHS not included in the above. More good stuff.

All the Pretty Horses. Thought this was some girl movie, so got it for my wife. Wow, what a well-done movie and a pleasant surprise. Some outstanding themes. A real western-like movie that's hard to find. Great story-telling. Never read the book, though.

Black Beauty. Not bad bringing that book to life. The horse narration seemed corny at first, but it smoothed out. They did a good job overall, in my amateur opinion. It was more emotional than Texas Chainsaw (below), but maybe you have to like horses.

    Horse Whisperer. Very enjoyable.

White Fang. I did read this book. Did a good job with a probably tough adaptation. Outstanding scenery.

    Catch-22. Outstanding.

Last of the Mohicans. More good stuff.

Casino. A little tiring, but good history and beating the crap out of people.

Analyze This. Good takeoff if you like gangster movies.

    Etc, etc.....

I want my money back category:

Texas Chainsaw Massacre. I thought this was the original I'd never seen, but it was the 2003 version. It was in the never opened package, but wow, what a suck. Only good thing was the girl wearing the low pants.

A Few Good Men. Okay, a dumb movie, but Jack Nicholson can make anything decent. Also, probably just fun to watch. The VHS tape screwed up, so I did get my money back.

The Spy Who Shagged Me. Set-up and gags were funny, but they kept repeating them. Oh well.

Sleepy Hollow (Tim Burton). Read this Hawthorne story, too. Must've been high when I got this movie.

Okay, what should I get next? What do you like and why? What's a must-have in your collection?

How does this make any sense?

Walmart and Dollar General aren't making the DVDs, they buy them from the same place as everyone else.

Or is there some conspiracy theory about DVDs that I've missed?

Maybe irregulars. Examples are off-center/misprint greeting cards sold at dollar stores; clothes with off seams, off-center print, uneven hems, etc.; food containers that are smashed. I'm sure they get some good ones, but maybe some junk. Maybe CDs that got scratched, dropped, etc. One hundred percent of items never come out of production with equal quality.

Maybe the manufacturer makes various quality CDs, just like a lot of other products sold at walmartt and junk stores. There's a good version and the junk version, and maybe versions in-between. I don't know much about CDs, but I think there are different thicknesses.

A lot of it could also be patrons just fucqing up the items they borrow. Anyway, I got tired of the library. We was in there 30 minutes before closing last spring, looking at movies to check out. It was 7 minutes before closing when this guy shuts off the lights right over our heads. No announcement or anything. I went back over to the light switch and turned it back on. Another library worker looked and shook her head. Probably lucky they did not call the police and give me a good tazing. lol

That was enough for me. I would also go in there looking for local source information. Every time, they'd tell me to go on the internet. Yeah, like I can't figure that out. Duh.

Maybe this will turn into a walmarx thread. heh

Owning physical media seems like a waste of space. I'd rather rent or stream a movie or TV show. I'll make exceptions for hard to find classic, indy, or foreign stuff, but I try to keep a very small collection.

    Update:

Okay, so we have a movie night once a week. We just watched The Sting this week. Seen it about 4 times. Great movie if you've never seen it.

Lots of funny lines. Like when Paul Newman (Henry Gondorf) does "The Hook" on Robert Shaw (plays Doyle Lonnegan). Gondorf wins a poker hand and purposely mispronounces Lonnegan's name. He says, "Tough luck, Lonnehan. But that's what you get for playing with your head up your ass."
