Default Downtown State College Taverns and Restaurants Will Not Serve Alcohol on State Patty's Day

Alcohol will not be available to patrons of downtown State College restaurants and bars on Saturday, otherwise known as 'State Patty's Day,' after an agreement was reached between members of the Tavern Association and Penn State and State College Borough officials.

The Partnership: Campus & Community United Against Dangerous Drinking announced via press release Tuesday it will provide a $5,000 subsidy "in acknowledgement of the lost revenues these businesses will undoubtedly suffer," Penn State said.
The money will come from parking fees collected during past State Patty's Day weekends, Penn State vice president for student affairs Damon Sims said.

Halting the sale of alcohol on the student-created holiday is an effort to curb dangerous drinking among students by The Partnership, which is made up of university, local and student leaders. They said establishments will continue to serve food and non-alcoholic beverages, "maintaining downtown's appeal for responsible visitors."

“But let it not be said that we did nothing. Let not those who love the power of the welfare/warfare state label the dissenters of authoritarianism as unpatriotic or uncaring. Patriotism is more closely linked to dissent than it is to conformity and a blind desire for safety and security. Understanding the magnificent rewards of a free society makes us unbashful in its promotion, fully realizing that maximum wealth is created and the greatest chance for peace comes from a society respectful of individual liberty.”

So they buy their alcohol on Friday and sit in front of the library drinking it on Saturday. LOL

this seems like it would encourage drinking and driving since the walk to establishments will not be serving

Sounds like a private, free market deal. I think I'm OK with this. However, if the kids did a serious boycott of the Taverns for the rest of the year it would be a formidable response.

So what are they going to do in the future if revenues plummet because people are going elsewhere than downtown on "State Patty's Day" ... ?

It's a rural college town in the middle of nowhere. Downtown is about all there is.

Most of the places on the list are so tiny they wouldn't even make $5,000 on a good day, so being paid to close is actually in their interests. Others (like The Tavern and The Corner Room) are not places trashy drunks will patron. The Tavern is a fine dining restaurant that's super expensive and The Corner Room is like a family friendly old-fashioned restaurant.

State Patty's Day is a dumb student-created drunken "holiday". It's important to note that most of the people arrested where from other universities. The goal of having an alcohol-free environment is to discourage rowdy visitors from staying/coming back.
