Equal Time? Full Rundown of How Long Each Candidate Was Allowed To Speak

Note that this is completely unscientific. When candidates spoke - I timed it. All time measurements are as accurate as my hand-ear coordination and TiVo trigger-finger. All calculations include the non-YouTube question asked of Rudy Guliani.

Number of Times a Candidate Received First Crack at a Question
    (RG) Rudy Giuliani (8)
    (FT) Fred Thompson (7)
    (MH) Mike Huckabee (4)
    (MR) Mitt Romney (4)
    (TT) Tom Tancredo (3)
    (RP) Ron Paul (3)
    (JM) John McCain (2)
    (DH) Duncan Hunter (2)

    Thoughts
This is my first post here, but have been lurking for months. I hope it is helpful. Please let me know if you see anything wonky in my numbers.

I thought Dr.Paul deserved more time (of course) as the only candidate that truly has an opposing view than the rest of the pack. That being said, the time he did have he didn't do much with IMO. I still support him and think he can win given the time and efforts of the grassroots - but it will be because of the grassroots, certainly not because he has been all that great at getting his message out to the masses in an easy to digest way. Maybe it was the questions, maybe he was sick (as rumored)... either way - not good overall last night on all fronts IMO. Not anything that will hurt, but still not good.

However, his post-debate speech was amazing. Too bad it was not as widely televised (or televised at all).

    Other thoughts:
    - I wish I had counted the number of times Cooper had to call "time" on each candidate. Anybody up for the challenge?
    - Dr.Paul's video was BY FAR the only video that was not contrived.
    - What was up with Cooper not referring to Dr.Paul as "Dr.Paul"? Seemed disrespectful.

Almost 8 minutes is a lot more than I thought he got.

Indeed, I don't think he had an exceptionally strong evening. If not for that last softball question about running as an independent, I would've graded the debate a C+. With that question, I'm guessing a B-.
You either believe that within your society more individuals are good than evil, and that by protecting the freedom of individuals within that society you will end up with a society that is as fair as possible, or you believe that within your society more individuals are evil than good, and that by limiting the freedom of individuals within that society you will end up with a society that is as fair as possible.

Thanks for compiling that. I was wondering if anyone had taken a count. Great job!

I'm actually really pleased with the comments I'm reading regarding Dr. Paul's debate performance. I think it was one of his weakest performances (I cringed when he couldn't remember the Kurds were in northern Iraq). I'm pleased because the opposition acts like we're a bunch of mindless zealots, when in fact I see a great deal of constructive criticism on this site. And what's going on with Huckabee surging in Iowa? Sheesh, doesn't anyone research this phoney's record in Arkansas?

7 minutes does seem high, but my outrage might have been clouding my judgment of such things near the end there. Thanks for the info.

Anderson Cooper FTL. What a wuss. "Time... no, okay, you can talk for another 10 seconds. Okay, now TIME, I mean it you guys, seriously! You're not done...? Well... okay... but... um... OMG TIME!"

    Thank you for this information

I think this was a great debate for Ron Paul and I rate his performance an A+. He hit the last 2 questions out of the park and won the battle vs. McCain which will help him with New Hampshire Independents. Out of the other top 6 candidates, only Huckabee and Thompson did ok. The rest were terrible. Ron Paul wins again.
"Instead of the “end of history,” we are now experiencing the end of a vocal limited-government movement in our nation’s capital. While most conservatives no longer defend balanced budgets and reduced spending, most liberals have grown lazy in defending civil liberties and now are approving wars that we initiate. The so-called “third way” has arrived and, sadly, it has taken the worst of what the conservatives and liberals have to offer." -Ron Paul

  14. #12
He got almost a 'fair' amount of time the problem was that he didn't get any time on a wide variety of issues that were dominated by Willard and Rudy.

  15. #13
    But still in the end

to me it was a staged debate

    if you look
rudy got more as did mitt rommey.

On the "Time" issue, I was particularly irate. Often, Cooper would call "time" apparently whenever he was board of listening to the candidate talk. Many people talked 10 seconds past what their time was supposed to be before Cooper would say "time". And a couple of times I swear he called "time" on Ron Paul at 20 seconds!

And then if we discount the crackhead questions, the questions which are not serious questions for a serious candidate, how much time did they REALLY give Ron Paul?

    1. Q5 - Council of Foreign Relations, 1:37
    2. Q16 - Abortion #1, 1:19
    3. Q32 - Ron Paul Run Independent? 0:46

While #3 there was a question we're all tired of hearing, and has been reported over and over in the news and was not a question worthy for a serious debate, I wouldn't have counted it in this section because Ron Paul really used that time well. The problem was that for primary questions (such as this), candidates were supposed to be given 90 seconds. So Ron Paul was robbed of at least 44 seconds there. (Anderson Cooper calling "time...... time" starting from 25 seconds or something.)

Total time they gave him, but ROBBED him on for not having serious questions/not giving him the appropriate time? 3:40

People say that the 7:21 minutes recorded for Ron Paul seems like a lot more time than he really got. Perhaps that's because Ron Paul was only given 3:41 of serious time.

Why did Thompson get 89 seconds, but Paul less than half of that? Weren't they supposed to get 90 seconds to answer a question, 30 seconds for a rebuttal?

    Q8 - Fair Tax?
    JM - 1:21
    RP - 0:35
And here McCain is cheating by using most of his 90 seconds to go off-topic and insult Dr. Paul, who doesn't even get half that time for a rebuttal.

  24. #21
Ohh... I like numbers. Why didn't you do percentage?

    Rudy Giuliani 14%
    Mitt Romney 12%
    John McCain 10%
    Fred Thompson 9%
    Mike Huckabee 8%
    Ron Paul 6%
    Hunter 4%
    Tom Tancredo 3%

That's how much time each of them took from the debate. The rest 44% was on questions, Anderson and some such. If we just concentrate on the 80 minutes of talking time for the candidates the percentages are thus:

    Rudy Giuliani 21%
    Mitt Romney 18%
    John McCain 15%
    Fred Thompson 14%
    Mike Huckabee 13%
    Ron Paul 9%
    Hunter 6%
    Tom Tancredo 5%

[I had to round the way I saw fit, that's why when you add these percentages you get 101]

EDIT: for equal time everybody would have to had Mike Huckabee's time, 9:30.

I wonder why RP was the only one who got a really hardball question such as the one concerning about the CFR/SPP which the people in Texas truly have fought to delay the international highway. I really believe the question should have been ask to every candidate, as in do you support the North American Union? Then of course we'd see al the candidates lie to us besides RP.
