    Chinese nuclear strike

    Anyone see this?

Apparently they want to nuke me here in Maine, but spare TX and FL and the whole south? (insert redneck southern joke here)

The Chinese don't even need to waste a nuke. They just need to say, "Pay back the 3 trillion you owe us."

From the article, I gathered that it relates to the West Coast and not Maine. You seem to be OK

Seems more like they don't know where it is on a map. Some of those dots are in random places. Looks like the Chinese want to nuke central PA and the middle of Michigan.

“If we launch our DF 31A ICBMs over the North Pole, we can easily destroy a whole list of metropolises on the East Coast and the New England region of the U.S., including Annapolis, Philadelphia, New York, Boston, Portland, Baltimore and Norfolk, whose population accounts for about one-eighth of America’s total residents,” the Global Times said.
If they can really nuke Portland we're both dead. And not the fun fast way, we'd die a slow death of radiation poisoning.

But it's China, the nuke probably won't work like the rest of their tech.

China is going about this the wrong way anyway, All they would need is 3 nukes to airburst above US, one west coast, one central and one east. After the EMP boobus won't be able to twitter facebook or keep up with the kardashians and will commence killing each other.

This. It would not take anywhere near the entire 3T either.

Even just a one off 500B dump changes the American Lifestyle.

500B one day and then 500B two days later. Modern version of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

On the other side of things, unless the Chinese already have other trade agreements they have not disclosed doing this would hurt their own markets. They are an export machine. The US/China relationship is one of co-dependency.

Mind you, the Chinese have spent the last 10 years systematically preparing themselves for the end of this codependent relationship. The US has done virtually nothing to prepare for it.

THAT is what Americans should be worried about. Not a militant China.

The highest populations of ethnic american chinese people live in the areas where the nukes can reach. Not that means anything. China did build the great wall that has lasted thousands of years to keep people out. China historically has been more defensive than offensive, cant recall any country they actively invaded (Mongolia?) Having nuclear capability is to make sure anyone that has the same capability leaves them alone.

The Chinese are very aggressive right now in the Sea of Japan and the South China sea. They are waging a cold war over small islands and the accompanying fishing, oil and mineral rights with the Philippines and Japan.

Good luck getting something to eat as the entire breadbasket of the US would be poisoned.

Most of the globe would starve to death.

Those northern tier and east coast targets account for their land based ICBM in an over-the-pole trajectory. The west coast are for their JL-2 SLBM, likely from a South China Sea launch point. Given the range of the JL-2 a launch from mid Pacific or mid Atlantic could cover the entire lower 48. This assumes they would let their SSBNs stray from the safety of their home waters. The same holds true for every other country's SSBNs.

China doesn't hold anywhere near $3 trillion in US federal government debt:

The bulk of China's foreign exchange reserves, which reached $3.66 trillion by the end of last month, is held in US Treasury bonds. Though China has never officially disclosed the exact amount, Li and other financial institutions believe China is the largest overseas creditor, with at least $1.28 trillion.

A Chinese exchange would automatically initiate a US-Russian exchange as well.

You are correct.. They would be nuking Los Angeles/San Francisco, which has one of the highest chinese and chinese-american populations on the western half of the US.

Pretty sure those that survive will be screwed because 1) They would probably be accused as being spies 2) Their homelands or ancestral home tried to kill them.

Hell, the chinese might as well nuke New York City as well.

    Nuking Cal. and NY............

I'd have to think about that one.....

Couldn't the rest of the country just force their populations into the sea in order to avoid the nukes?

Existential threat. Better push for sanctions and a UN Security Council authorization for use of force. If not, we'll have to do it unilaterally. Who will join the coalition of the willing?

Yeah, and the debt will just be rolled over when the principal comes due. Someone will lend the government the money and if not, they'll just print it and issue new bonds/notes/bills.

I can't seem to find the original Global Times article on which the Washington Times was reporting.

There have been quite a few articles on that site about Chinese nuclear subs, though. Apparently they've been having some trouble keeping state secrets, so the Chinese got the idea, from the Pentagon, to not try to hide as much. They think that openly displaying power by giving tours to the public of things like nuclear submarines, (as the US does, according to the article) will help instill some national pride and make the people feel more safe from foreign threats. They figure they weren't really keeping it secret from foreign intelligence, anyways, so why put in the effort of hiding.

Typical military PR. They call their nuclear submarines "a shield preserving world peace and stability"

Liberty is lost through complacency and a subservient mindset. When we accept or even welcome automobile checkpoints, random searches, mandatory identification cards, and paramilitary police in our streets, we have lost a vital part of our American heritage. America was born of protest, revolution, and mistrust of government. Subservient societies neither maintain nor deserve freedom for long.

Speaking of cold war, Russia could have nuked the "freedom" out of our entire country several times over during that cold war and all that worry led to....well......nothing but a bunch of needless ulcers.

They can't. Most, if not all the US debt they hold is in treasury bonds. They mature at some interval and then you cash them in. Premature cash-in or sale usually results in some loss, possibly of principal depending on the circumstances. Given that US debt is heading for the tank, selling those bonds are likely to result in $#@! returns, possibly negative. The US is under no obligation to pay up any time prior to the maturity date, so until then China can demand anything it wants and the US can waggle its tongue at them. Depending on what the actual reality is behind the curtains of the world stage, come maturity time there is nothing in principle to stop the Treasury from "printing" those trillions, palleting them over the Beijing and saying, "thanks, here's yer money.... har har har har... Short of attempting military action, China will be buttholed real good. Serve 'em right, too, for doing business with the Feds. Nobody with the sense of a boiled turnip does business with those scoundrels.

Depends on your point of view, I guess. Wikipedia says:

1534 - 1895 the islands were controlled by China, according to China. Japan disputes this and says no one controlled them. They were uninhabited and unused.

1895 - 1945 the islands were controlled by Japan, according to the terms of the The Treaty of Shimonoseki, which ended the First Sino-Japanese War. China does not dispute this.

1900 - 1940 there was a Japanese fish processing plant on the islands. They were deserted before and after. You might say this was homesteading.

1945 - Potsdam Declaration determined the terms of Japanese surrender from WW2. Japan was limited to four named islands "and such minor islands as we determine." The agreement was signed by Japan, the UK, the US, and China. The Potsdam Declaration stated that it would abide by the 1943 Cairo Declaration, signed by the US, UK, and China, which said "Japan shall be stripped of all the islands in the Pacific which she has seized or occupied since the beginning of the first World War in 1914, and that all the territories Japan has stolen from the Chinese, such as Manchuria, Formosa (Taiwan), and The Pescadores, shall be restored to the Republic of China."

1945 - 1972 they were controlled by the US

1968 oil discovered. Suddenly Japan, China, and Taiwan are all more interested in the uninhabited islands.

1972 the US gave control back to Japan.

2010 Japan runs off a Chinese fishing boat

So Japan says that China never had control of the uninhabited islands and China says they had control prior to 1895 and should have had them back after WW2.
