Dr. Paul officially endorses Owen Hill for US Senate in Colorado

Exciting news here in Colorado! Dr. Paul has publicly endorsed Owen Hill, who is running to unseat Mark Udall in the US Senate. The campaign sent out the following press release this morning.

I'm really encouraged by this and Owen has huge momentum building - he is the new face of the Republican party, bridging the gap between the old guard and the increasingly popular libertarian base within the conservative movement.

RON PAUL ENDORSES OWEN HILL FOR UNITED STATES SENATE

Dr. Ron Paul, former Congressman from Texas, Republican Presidential candidate, and
father of current Senator Rand Paul, has endorsed Owen Hill’s run for United States
    Senate in Colorado.

"Owen Hill is exactly the kind of person Colorado and this country needs in the US
    Senate.”

Dr. Paul released a public endorsement letter where he referenced Hill’s track record of
standing for liberty and with the people of Colorado.

“[Hill’s] stand against the Colorado gun bills, along with his bills to eliminate the food tax,
rein in unconstitutional spending and bring worker freedom to Colorado with right to
work shows me he can be counted on to work for limited government and more
personal liberties,” Dr. Paul said of Hill.

Dr. Paul recognized that, “these are tough things for veteran legislators to do. It is even
more impressive to see a freshman take leadership and stand firm on these issues.”

“I am honored by Dr. Paul’s enthusiastic support and am grateful for his model of
advancing freedom during his time in Congress,” Hill responded. “Dr. Paul built his
political identity around standing for states rights, defending life, and working
relentlessly to decrease the size and scope of the federal government.”

Hill concluded that, “This is yet another big milestone for our campaign. I look forward to
following in the footsteps of leaders like Dr. Paul and standing along side heroic
conservatives like Rand Paul in the Senate.”

Included with Dr. Paul’s endorsement was a $2,500 donation from Liberty PAC.

Does he have competition in the primary? Any poll numbers yet?

Also I think the Twitter link you were trying to set in your post is not what you wanted - just an FYI if you want to go back and edit.

There are no polls yet, but right now his main competition in the primary is Ken Buck, who has strong Tea Party support - he was endorsed by FreedomWorks, DeMint/Senate Conservatives Fund, Tea Party Express and Campaign for Liberty in 2010. He'll be a tough opponent for sure. His weakness is that he's not on great terms with Palin. If she comes out and endorses Hill over him, that could tip him over Buck. Also, Tea Party Express have only been promoting Hill on their site so far, suggesting they may well endorse him this time round. FreedomWorks have been taken over by the liberty movement since 2010 so it's likely they'll favor the more libertarian candidate, Hill. DeMint/SCF will probably stick by Buck.

There are two other candidates - State Rep. Amy Stephens and State Sen. Randy Baumgardner. Fairly generic establishment Republicans, a split in the conservative vote could lead to one of them being nominated.

Good info. I remember the support of Buck being controversial in 2010. I also remember that Buck had a decent chance of winning the seat and presumably would have been OK (though not 100% with us for sure). What would you say differentiates Hill from Buck most clearly?

Yeah, he'd definitely be better than the average Republican. Most likely on par with Mulvaney or Labrador if he won. Hill is a Rand/Massie/Amash type, closely aligned on fiscal policy with Buck, but probably more consistently good on foreign policy and civil liberties issues.

I would be surprised to see the Tea Party groups split their support in a race like this ... they got burned doing that in two Senate races in 2012.

Yes, this would be a good link to tweet out: http://www.owenhillforsenate.com/201...l-endorsement/

As to Hill's competition, etc. Buck did indeed have tea party support in 2010 when he lost to Bennet. But most all grassroots/tea party/liberty groups have been leaning toward Owen already thus far for 2014...as pointed out above.

Buck wouldn't have been that great in the Senate even if had won. Plus, the man has like a zero political IQ, he got easily suckered into social issue debates. This is the kryptonite of these tea party types, they have a tendency to go all Bible thumper and it looks very inconsistent with the liberty message. Then they get crushed on election day because nobody wants a theocrat.

"Of the two reports, Hill's $250k is the more important figure. After a strong 2010 Senate run, Ken Buck was expected to be able to raise a significant amount of money for his campaign, but Owen Hill was certainly an unknown entity in that regard. Raising $250k should be enough to answer questions about his viability as a candidate for U.S. Senate after Buck entered the race."
