How can spending be going down? Isn't that number the total for the year so far?
The proper concern of society is the preservation of individual freedom; the proper concern of the individual is the harmony of society.

Nice find. The deficit is probably going down because if you'll notice tax revenue is still increasing.

I'm not sure how the spending is factored. The interest on debt will continue to accrue on what we've already borrowed for, so that's why the national debt still goes up.

    Check out defense/war spending.

Budget deficit and federal spending going down.

But total debt still going up. Is this due to interest payments on the debt?

Also, do the deficit and spending decreases have anything to do with the shutdown?

Stimulus funding is drying up, Iraq funding is no longer around, corporate taxes are inching down, and hopefully Afghanistan funding gets the plug pulled by 2015 as well. Those are the positives.

The payroll tax cut was eliminated, and spending is still way too high. The obvious negatives.

Deficits are trending down, but the outputs are still outpacing the inputs. That's why total debt is still going up.
