On the cusp of a possible U.S. military strike against Syria, one of its most fierce opponents reaffirmed his stance to Battle Creek residents: Congress must approve war, he said, and he would not support it.
“The Constitution and the War Powers Resolution do not permit the president to go to war,” said U.S. Rep. Justin Amash, “which is attack another country, without congressional authorization.”
During his third visit to Battle Creek in about two months, the Cascade Township Republican told constituents during a coffee hour and a town hall Wednesday that Syria’s alleged use of chemical weapons did not pose an imminent threat against the U.S. — and that President Obama was only allowed to authorize defensive, not offensive, action.
