No more porn: UK government to activate adult content filters by default

In a speech later today, David Cameron will announce that, by the end of this year, all new UK broadband accounts will have adult content filters activated by default. Such restrictions will only be removed if the account-holder specifically requests it. Meanwhile, around 20 million users already connected will be presented with an "unavoidable decision" concerning adult content, and public WiFi providers must advertise if they utilize filters or not. Cameron also wants to outlaw "extreme pornography," unify police forces' regional databases and request that the Child Exploitation and Online Protection Center draws up a "blacklist" of search terms to prevent people from searching for outlawed images online. Legislation will be introduced towards the end of the year to codify the changes, and ISPs not considered to be doing enough will be forced into action.

What is it? The UK is typically 10 years ahead of the United States? Sounds about right.

The bigger question is: what will become of those who opt out of the filter? Will they be put into a database? Have to register with their community as a 'pornography viewer'? Will there be websites you can visit and search for nearby 'pornography viewers'?

    WikiLeaks Exposes Australian Web Blacklist

    By David Kravets

    12:28 PM

WikiLeaks on Thursday exposed a secret blacklist of web pages the Australian government reportedly is considering permanently filtering from the internet.

The list of some 2,395 web pages, the authenticity of which the Australian authorities dispute, includes the usual suspects of sites pertaining to child pornography, extreme violence and even bestiality. But not all the sites are offensive, and include links to rank-and-file pornography, YouTube videos, poker sites, WikiLeaks entries and even URLs to a Queensland dentist and dog-boarding kennel.

"History shows that secret censorship systems, whatever their original intent, are invariably corrupted into anti-democratic behavior," WikiLeaks said in a statement. "This week saw Australia joining China and the United Arab Emirates as the only countries censoring WikiLeaks."

The disclosure highlights growing threats to an open internet from public and private entities.

Beyond the obvious online censorship in China, Russia, Thailand and elsewhere, the Recording Industry Association of America is seeking to ban copyright scofflaws from the internet altogether. In the United States and abroad, governments and Hollywood are moving to shutter BitTorrent tracking services like The Pirate Bay, whose four founders are awaiting a verdict in their criminal copyright infringement trial.

The federal government in Australia wants to force all ISPs to use the list to censor the internet for everyone. It’s allegedly the same list that vendors of filtering software get from the Australian Communications and Media Authority.

Child Wise, an international child protection charity based in Australia, said the list’s publication is bad for children and the person who exposed it should be jailed.

"Every 15-year-old boy in the country is going to be after this porn list," said Bernadette McMenamin, the group’s executive director. "The person who’s done this should be prosecuted and jailed for effectively disseminating and promoting child pornography."

"The leak and publication of prohibited URLs is grossly irresponsible," Communications Minister Stephen Conroy told The Australian. "It undermines efforts to improve cyber-safety and create a safe online environment for children."

Conroy attempted to cast doubt on the authenticity of the leaked list by highlighting discrepancies in the blacklist’s size. While the leaked list contains 2,395 banned web pages, he said the government’s blacklist contains about 1061 links.

    ====
Wikileaks published a bunch of these secret "blacklists". While supposedly to "protect the children", because the lists were secret, basically every county to implement one, IMMEDIATELY used it to quell political dissent.

More camels nose under the tent BS, with massive blowback for the fascists that pulled this crap. OH, YEAH, this was a US driven effort, as usual.

LOL, I thought we in the U.S. were supposed to be the repressed, puritanical ones.

I wouldn't live in that statist hellhole for all the "free healthcare" in the world.

This what happens when you give the govt. an inch on the internet or anything else. They just keep pushing, and pushing until one day, you realize you're in a small box and wondering how you got there.

Anyone still want the US govt to control the internet?

    Guilty until proven Innocent.

    ---

What a great idea! If people dont have access to porn, then they'll stop having all this ridiculus premaritial sex, and the percentage of children with unmarried parents will drop to 0.0000% and all rape will just stop and all sex offenders will stop sexually offending crimes and teen pregnancies will just magically drop (unless they are married) and STD's willl just go away and their version of the TSA will just stop cavity searches and TSA Gaterape will disappear too! We all know that breastfeeding infants is also what turns people into rapists, pedophiles, and perverts in general! It would be so much better if people had no idea what their partners looked like! Like in India (I think) where a womans ObGyn is only allowed to view her genitals in a Mirror because looking at those body parts is what creates perverts and criminals!

Will this apply to government computers or the politicians themselves? Or will they get an exemption for their kiddie porn?

I will note, this article treats this as a good thing. I personally view this as disgusting, and site this article by liberal freaks to show that liberals are really about social engineering and not freedom. I post the article because it gets the info across, not because I agree with their "Spin" on that info.

    LOL!

I'm in favor of any consensual actions, including having sex and videoing it, being legal, but you've also got to realize that this kind of stuff warps people's views of sexuality and destroys families. So I completely disagree with the whole libertine "Internet is invented for porn" attitude. Porn is evil. It shouldn't be illegal but people should choose to avoid it: its the right thing to do.

hmmm.... We should run a Libertine Party candidate for prez. If keeping p0rn legal was the platform, I bet they would win.

A friend of a friend worked in the accounting department at an institution that often hired famous political speakers (all expenses paid). The hotel bill often included adult movie charges...

Who wants to bet that any legislation that bans adult internet content will not ban it from Hotel (and cable) pay per view?

Sex and Politics are the worlds two oldest professions. Why is it that both constantly denounce each other while both are so remarkably similar? If there were to be a real solution to the problem, I'd say outlaw Politics instead of Porn and the world might just turn out to be a much better place!
