WASHINGTON — Trey Radel has plunged into the drone debate that’s dividing prominent Republicans on Capitol Hill.
The libertarian-minded House member from Fort Myers is sponsoring a bill that would bar the government from using unmanned aerial vehicles to kill Americans on U.S. soil.
“The Life, Liberty, and Justice for All Americans Act” would prohibit the government from using “lethal military force” on its citizens at home unless the president determines an individual “poses an imminent threat of death or serious bodily injury to another individual” and that preventive action would save lives.
Radel said the drone issue “has sparked a lot of questions” that need answers. He said he hopes his answers some of them or at least provokes a discussion.
“When are you (entitled to) due process? Where does the battlefield in the war on terror end? And is it in the United States?” he said. “We’ve got multiple gray areas.”
