ASK THE SHERIFF: Rethinking how we protect our greatest treasures

Constitutional Sheriff Brad Rogers takes on school security.

    Top quotes from the column:
"We need to look at barriers to unauthorized entry without turning our schools into prisons."
"Gun-free zones are kill zones. Arming all teachers is not the solution, but arming a few select, highly trained staff, that can conceal a firearm and pepper spray, know how to keep a firearm from children and how to act when law enforcement arrives on the scene, is something that should be on the table."

How does one restrict access and create barriers to entry without becoming more prison- like? (school shootings tend to be done by students at the school- this would not do much to prevent such rare events).

Not teachers. OK- then who? School nurse? Librarian? Principal? An armed guard (back again to more prison like).

He said we should not arm ALL teachers. There is a good chance that many of them would not feel comfortable with carrying a gun, those that do should be highly trained.
