Russia begins evacuation of its citizens from Syria

    hxxp://www.foxnews.com/world/2013/01/21/russia-to-begin-evacuating-its-citizens-from-syria/

MOSCOW – Russia is sending two planes to Lebanon to evacuate Russians from Syria, the government said Monday, a move that suggests Moscow is growing doubtful that Syrian President Bashar Assad can cling to power in the face of an armed uprising.

The Emergency Situations Ministry said two of its planes were scheduled to fly to Beirut on Tuesday to carry more than 100 Russians from Syria.

Russia has been the main ally of Assad since the start of the conflict in the Arab state in March 2011, using its veto power at the United Nations Security Council to shield Damascus from international sanctions.

But it has recently begun to distance itself from the Syrian ruler, signaling it is resigned to him losing power.

Russia's Foreign Ministry has said that it has contingency plans in place to evacuate thousands of Russians from Syria. Russian officials said both planes and sea vessels could be used in the effort.

A squadron of Russian Navy ships is currently in the Mediterranean for a planned exercise near Syrian shores later this month. Military officials earlier said that the exercise will simulate both the landing of marines and taking people on board from the shore.

Russia's naval base in the Syrian port of Tartus is the only such facility it has outside the former Soviet Union.

Russians have been leaving/evacuating from Syria for almost 2 years... RPF has reported those dated moves and state of conditions in multiple threads/posts... go look for them on this forum or google the other dates media have reported Russians leaving Syria..

Here's a much more accurate depiction, it differs quite a bit from the FOX/FASCIST corp News Media outlets "Pavlov's NEWS ALERT on collapsing Evil Syria": http://www.infowars.com/russia-to-ev...s-from-beirut/

Russia is sending two passenger planes to Beirut to fly home Russian citizens who have fled the conflict in Syria.

The emergency situations ministry said more than 100 people were expected to board the aircraft on Tuesday.

The foreign ministry has contingency plans for the large-scale evacuation of 30,000 Russian citizens in Syria.

It would be the first such airlift since the uprising against President Bashar al-Assad began in March 2011. Moscow has been a staunch ally.

Russia’s Emergencies Ministry is sending two planes to the Lebanese capital to pick those Russians who want to leave Syria torn by the ongoing civil conflict. The aircraft leave for Beirut on Tuesday, some 100 Russians are expected to be evacuated.

Two planes, Il-76 and Yak-42, both able to cary up to 120 passengers will be dispatched for Beirut, the ministry confirmed on Monday. The crews will include medics and psychologists.

About 150 Russian citizens, who want to leave Syria are already in Beirut. Most of those being evacuated are women and children.

Earlier media reported that Russia was considering using the navy to evacuate its citizens from Syria. This appeared to be confirmed when several warships were sent to the Mediterranean sea. But the Foreign Ministry denied the speculation, saying the deployment was for scheduled military drills.

In December a member of the National Coalition for Syrian Revolutionary and Opposition Forces, a newly formed opposition body recognized by the West, called Russian citizens in Syria ‘legitimate targets.’
"Russia, like Iran, supports the Assad regime with weapons and ammunition, as well as in the political arena, so the citizens of these countries are legitimate targets for militants in Syria," Haitham al-Maleh, a member of the coalition told RT.*
