Russian soldiers to trade foot wraps for socks

    From Associated Press
    January 14, 2013 5:18 PM EST
MOSCOW (AP) A Russian official says it's time for the nation's soldiers to switch from foot wraps to socks.

Since the late 17th century, Russian soldiers have been using wraps, rectangular strips of cloth that are carefully wrapped around their bare feet to prevent blisters from tall heavy boots with no laces.

But Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu, who took the post two months ago, said he was surprised to learn that some soldiers are still using the wraps, called "portyanki" in Russian, and told them to use socks instead.

At a televised meeting with military officers Monday, he said, "In 2013, or at least by the end of 2013, we must forget the word portyanki."

Czar Peter the Great adopted the custom from the Dutch army in the late 17th century

In last year's Victory Day parade, there was only one piece of equipment in use, that was in service with Soviet forces in 1990. The Russian army is trying to modernize itself.
Out of every one hundred men they send us, ten should not even be here. Eighty will do nothing but serve as targets for the enemy. Nine are real fighters, and we are lucky to have them, upon them depends our success in battle. But one, ah the one, he is a real warrior, and he will bring the others back from battle alive.

I know this was posted as a joke, but it might not be bad information to know in a SHTF scenario.

Russia should make a greatest hits video. Could be a boon for their economy.

I'd give the Russians the edge in the following areas (A) operational maneuver commnad and control (B) AVFs appear to have higher quality fire control, stabilization, thermal sights, and ability to manufacture some type of tank CITV which gives the tank crew the ability to more rapidly engage subsequent targets (C) use of combined arms - infantry, armor, artillery, aviation, special forces.

I'd give the Chinese the edge in maintaining unit cohesion and ability to take losses and continue to fight - plus the inevitible fact that quantity has a quality of its own.

When you consider Russians or Eastern Europeans in general the ability to take losses and take it to the end is not really a trait anyone can edge them out.

Why did Russia do so bad in Chechnya? On paper they should mop the floor with anyone other than us.

How would the Russian air force fare against the Chinese?

It was after the fall of the Soviet Union and no one knew who was eating and drinking and who was paying. They were sending conscript units telling them they would act as garrison troops and instead they were going directly into Grozni .They were even cases where they sent a few units of Spetsnaz into the city telling they should hold a few streets and leaving them there for weeks.

On the other side the rebels knew the terrain were almost all ex-soldiers because of compulsory service for a year or two dependent on the time period and had all the weapons they needed from the soviet arsenals. The Russians were sending armored columns into the city and the Chechens picked them off with RPG`s from the basements and apartment blocks. Also most of the city`s had major Russian population so they never used strategical bombers or balistical missiles

It would be something like if Virginia,Washington,Texas and California left the Union, then the USA having an economic collapse and then Colorado or some other state rebels with force and is being supplied from Texas.I don't think that the USA army would be in a pretty good shape or organisation to handle the situation.

We have limited data points to assess effectiveness. Looking at China in 1979 Vietnam, 1962 India, and the Korean War, is not the same as the PLA today, but each case was a willingness to conduct offensive operations against another military.

We look at Russia in Chechnia or Georgia, or even the Soviets in Afghanistan, they are not fighting other national military organizations (although Georgia was in the process of trying to create one).

Army vs. army is a different dynamic, than army vs. militia, or vs. insurgency, or against an unarmed population. Most military organizations train to fight other military units, until the political leadership try to use the military to "nation build" and other unsuitable tasks.

My view of Russia is that they are working to try to have a similar level of professionalism as the NATO countries. China seems to have a political element to the PLA, and are still about a generation behind the Russians in what I think is the quality of their major weapons systems.

So, if Russia and NATO were to fight, sans nuclear weapons, would Russia be formidable enough to exact so many losses as to force a ceasefire, or would they fold like every other organized military that has faced NATO in the last few decades?

Long term guerrilla conflicts against a population that is generationally dedicated to driving you out are almost always impossible to win. Really, who "surrenders" to you in a Chechnya or Vietnam or Afghanistan? And it ain't like the old days where you could just wipe out the indigenous population without someone saying something. (You still can, you just have to be more circumspect in how.)

Yes but unlike Afghanistan and Vietnam the Russians had a large populations of Russians + Cossacks who were loyal and fought against the rebels (and not the kind of South Vietnam Afghanistan way ).They used fuel-air explosives ( and a few massacres ) to scare most of Chechnians to flee and in the end overwhelmed everything with manpower.Today the rebellion is completely destroyed.Chechsnia is also a small region unlike Afghanistan or Vietnam.

Let's keep this simply perspective: Russia's trade surplus'

    2012: $204.2 Billion
    2011 $198.2 Billion
    2010 to $167.5 Billion
    2009: $135.3 Billion

    Now back to sefdom...

US government has learned from history and the Middle and poor classes are paying in blood and inflation, but they don't give a shit, there's far greater powers that control or partner-up with the clowns in Congress to use US & sell US all out. THE FED fuels the machine by proxy of their printing machines.

Waiting for that state ruled conscription, which is just militarized slavery. Hmm... maybe they can use prison inmates to be sent overseas into 'Penal Panzer Units' sound familiar? Doesn't matter the country, the state can cloth/treat you any way they wish, and it will suck. So ramp-up the Banksters & MIC WWIII 'RISK' game, it will be the ending to freedoms in every country/state. Won't take much propaganda on the American jello brained society to reduce age of conscription or use 'Sub-Human Slave Inmates' to "Save The Nation" under Jingoism/Nationalism/Fear Fascism.
