Thumbs up $42 hand-held ham radio!

I have a similar model by the same company and it works great. My friend owns this model too and it is awesome (although he has an extended battery for it).

If you're thinking about getting into ham radio, now is a great time, and it's cheap to do.

Here is the book that will teach you what you need to know:

A website on how to become a ham:

    Online practice exam:

You don't have to know all of this, but it's cool to look at (notice the chart at the bottom):

wow. Is it a real ham radio? I was thinking table top was what it took..... I wonder what the range is...

at that price it sure seems like a deal.

edit, it says 'local area', so how does it differ from those emergency walkie talkies?

Well you typically use it with a local repeater someone has set up:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Repeater

Distance for RF is dependent upon a great many factors such as atmospheric and EMF conditions, line of sight, interference, output power (ERP), antenna length, antenna efficiency, and the frequency.

That being said, these hand held radios can typically get a few miles away. I used my 2watt radio on Lookout Mountain in Chattanooga a few weeks ago and I was able to make contact 50 miles away. Of course I was well over a thousand feet above average terrain so I had a line of sight to many places on the horizon.

In most situations I can hit a few miles across town, which is all I need to be able to hit a 150watt repeater which can then amplify my signal and allow me to converse with people dozens of miles away.

Most states have a ton of active repeaters, here is a listing: http://www.artscipub.com/repeaters/

Prices have dropped like a rock because of China making these things on the cheap. Baofeng and Waxon are the two least expensive brands. Companies like iCOM and Yaesau sell these for hundreds of dollars. Granted the more expensive radios are probably better built and more durable, but for the price of the less expensive ones, they are almost disposable!
