    Israel Says
It Repelled Most Attacks on Its Web Sites by Pro-Palestinian Hackers
    ISABEL KERSHNER April 7, 2013

JERUSALEM — A loose international coalition of pro-Palestinian computer hackers threatened to carry out what it called “a massive cyberassault” against Israel on Sunday, but the campaign created mostly minor disruptions, and the Israeli government said that as of midday its Web sites were still accessible to the public.

Numerous sites, including some hosted by the government, were briefly closed down or defaced starting on Saturday evening, and some data was stolen, according to Israeli cyberexperts. On Sunday afternoon, the Ministry of Finance said in a statement that government sites were “under DDoS attack,” referring to Distributed Denial of Service, a method used by hackers to make sites unavailable, and that Israeli computer experts were working to repel the attacks in cooperation with Internet service providers.

The statement added that the Foreign Affairs Ministry’s Web site was inaccessible “for a few seconds before returning to normal operations” and that generally “a slowdown or unavailability of service could be expected from time to time.”

The Web site of Yad Vashem, Israel’s official Holocaust memorial, was also hit by a cyberattack as Israel was preparing to mark its annual Holocaust Remembrance Day.

Guy Mizrahi of Cyberia, an Israeli cybersecurity firm, said in an interview that the damage was not significant and that most of the attacks were “childish.”
The shadowy network of hackers who identified themselves as belonging to the Anonymous collective, along with various allied groups, announced last week that “elite cybersquadrons from around the world” had decided to unite to “disrupt and erase Israel from cyberspace.” Among other things, they blamed Israel for violating the November cease-fire in Gaza by carrying out airstrikes, a reference to the assaults on Tuesday on two open areas in northern Gaza that caused no damage or casualties. Israel said the strikes were in response to a renewal of rocket fire into southern Israel.

Israel has been working to protect itself from cyberattacks, establishing a National Cyber Bureau in early 2012 to coordinate computer security efforts.
Isaac Ben Israel of the National Cyber Bureau told Israel Radio on Sunday that Israel “has always been more prepared than other places in the world.”
“When we talk about cyberwar we are talking about attacks on water, electricity, infrastructure, but Anonymous does not have that kind of ability,” he said. “The fact that we don’t have any big damage is not because there are no attacks. We see the attacks, and they are blocked.”

Pro-Israeli hackers, some working under the name Israeli Elite Force, said they had retaliated by posting pro-Israeli messages onWeb sites in the Muslim world.

The pro-Palestinian hackers called their campaign Operation Israel. Activists logged and tracked their progress through a Twitter account, #OpIsrael.
But some of the sites in Israel that the hackers had claimed to have brought down — like the ones hosted by Coca-Cola, the prime minister’s office and Invest in Israel, an initiative of the Industry, Trade and Labor Ministry, appeared to be working on Sunday.

The pro-Palestinian hackers seemed to have had more success in attacking small businesses and individual Facebook pages. At midday they announced on Twitter that they had defaced the Web site of an Israeli hair salon, Peter Hair, in Ramat Hasharon, near Tel Aviv.

The salon site’s home page showed a person with a masked face, an image associated with Anonymous, holding a sign saying “Indonesian Security Down #OP ISRAHELL.” The rest of the screen was filled with a message to the government, accusing Israel of having “wronged humanity.” The hackers signed off with the message, “We are Muslims, Soldier of Allah.”

Reached by telephone on Sunday evening, the owner of the salon, Peter Imseis, said he had not been aware that the site had been hacked and added that it had not affected his business. Asked why he thought the salon had become a target, he said, “I don’t have a clue. It’s very strange.”

Hackers briefly take down some 100 Israeli websites

Some government sites disrupted, but anti-Israel hackers fail to deliver on their promise to ‘wipe Israel off the map of the Internet.’

    By Oded Yaron and Gili Cohen | Apr.08, 2013 | 6:03 AM |

About 100 Israeli websites, including some government sites, were disrupted for varying periods of time on Sunday, but the long-promised cyber attack by anti-Israel hackers certainly didn’t “wipe Israel off the map of the Internet” as the attackers had promised.

Some small websites were shut down Sunday by the so-called “Operation Israel” attack, but of the few major sites hit, most were affected only briefly. The latter included the Education Ministry website, which crashed Saturday night, and the Israel Military Industries website.

“Fewer than 100 small websites and some 15 large organizations were affected for periods ranging from a few minutes to a few hours. Only two or three were affected for lengthy periods,” said Avi Weissman, the CEO of See-Security, which was responsible for the “situation room” run by the Israeli Forum for Information Security.

Web security experts said there were significant efforts to attack Israeli websites through distributed denial-of-service attacks − in which a flood of incoming messages forces a targeted website to shut down and deny service to legitimate users − but the Israeli web community rebuffed most of them. Several banks fended off attacks simply by denying access from abroad.

Many of the attacks were far less sophisticated than the pre-attack hacker hype led people to expect. “Compared to what I was expecting from such an attack, this was nothing,” said Weissman. “The successes were at an even lower level.”

A number of lists released by hackers yesterday included email addresses and credit card numbers lifted from government and business sites. But the list was later found to be compiled from old data circulated by hackers in the past.

Israeli hackers meanwhile launched a counter-attack. One of the targets was OpIsrael.com, the website used by the organizers of the virtual offensive. Israelis posted pro-Israel content on the site, along with audio of “Hatikvah,” the country’s national anthem.

Web experts continued to warn Israelis to be wary through today, though, on the assumption that a failure to take down major networks might lead the hackers to focus on less-well-protected sites so as not to be left without any victory to claim.

You are right- that was an Israeli news site- but given that I could easily get news from an Israeli site is further proof that Israel was NOT knocked off the internet map permanantly- which is actually I chose it over some others I could have selected.

    Wrong.
SOME Palestinians are fighting back against an oppressive invader using the very limited tools available.

    As far as US involvement,,,
From the beginning,, and continuing since.. Arms, Technology, Money, and political support. To the detriment of the US people.

Anonymous is making a statement.. nothing more.
Liberty is lost through complacency and a subservient mindset. When we accept or even welcome automobile checkpoints, random searches, mandatory identification cards, and paramilitary police in our streets, we have lost a vital part of our American heritage. America was born of protest, revolution, and mistrust of government. Subservient societies neither maintain nor deserve freedom for long.

No one is entitled to a "homeland" and no nation's existence is guaranteed. If the West and/or Israel can dominate a piece of earth and maintain it, they are free to do so. If Muslim nations can overtake that plot of land, they are free to do so.

As much as we reject force and violence, they ARE real and they ultimately decide every struggle. To that end, as an American, I do not care who wins that struggle. I think that there is a better chance of us living peacefully alongside the Israelis than Muslim extremists, but I fear neither, for a variety of reasons. Noting that, I would prefer that we mind our own business and refrain from even judging who is bad and who is good.

You have it backwards, fundamentalists muslims are Israel/US's natural allies in most of the cases from Saudi Arabia to Egypt to Libya,Syria, Afghanistan and beyond and they are some of the most oppressive in their reigns, it is often the rebels within those countries that take up violence and become killers. Some of the biggest killers/terrorists we have been fighting had advanced degrees, doctors/engineers etc.

Saw coverage on our local Fox station on the news, I think it was yesterday, and the lies and spin they put on this.... They said something to the effect that "Israel security experts easily repelled all the cyber attacks launched by the Islamists, and then they counter-attacked and successfully hacked the Islamists." That's not word for word but that was the gist of it.
