Between 1936 and 1977 hundreds of thousands of people were murdered (‘disappeared’) in Spain by the forces of Francoism. This genocide was blotted out of existence by a law passed in 1977 making it illegal to even mention this dark side of recent Spanish history. In 2008 the celebrated jurist Baltasar Garzon declared the acts of repression committed by the Franco regime to be crimes against humanity and accounted them in more than one hundred thousand killings during and after the Spanish Civil War. However, litigation was taken, in turn, against him by conservative and right-wing organisations, which resulted in the legal action being halted. Now, all that has changed with a number of organisations joining legal action via the courts in Argentina against the Spanish State. Now the truth of the genocide will come out. Details of the writ are given below by the CNT, one of the main litigants.
