    I'm so glad every Senator kneels before Israel

    This abomination of a resolution, after being passed to every Senator's office, passed by unanimous consent:

    Expressing vigorous support and unwavering commitment
    to the welfare, security, and survival of the State of
    Israel as a Jewish and democratic state with secure
    borders, and recognizing and strongly supporting its
    right to act in self-defense to protect its citizens against
    acts of terrorism.

    Whereas Hamas was founded with the stated goal of destroying the State of Israel;

    Whereas Hamas has been designated by the Secretary of
    State as a Foreign Terrorist Organization;

    Whereas Hamas refuses to recognize Israel’s right to exist,
    renounce violence, and accept previous agreements between Israel and the Palestinians; 2

    Whereas Hamas has launched thousands of rockets and missiles since Israel dismantled settlements and withdrew
    from Gaza in 2005;

    Whereas terrorists in the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip have
    fired approximately 900 rockets and missile shells into
    Israel this year, an increase from roughly 675 attacks in
    2011 and 350 in 2010;

    Whereas Hamas has increased the range of its rockets, reportedly with support from Iran and others, putting additional large numbers of Israelis in danger of rocket attacks from Gaza;

    Whereas, on November 14, 2012, President Barack Obama
    condemned the rocket fire from Gaza into Israel and reiterated Israel’s right to self-defense; and

    Whereas Israel, as a fellow democracy, has an inherent right
    to self defense in the face of terrorist attacks: Now,
    therefore, be it

    1 Resolved, That the Senate—
    2 (1) expresses unwavering commitment to the
    3 security of the State of Israel as a Jewish and demo-
    4 cratic state with secure borders, and recognizes and
    5 strongly supports its inherent right to act in self-de-
    6 fense to protect its citizens against acts of terrorism;
    7 (2) reiterates that Hamas must end Gaza-
    8 linked terrorist rocket and missile attacks against
    9 Israel, recognize Israel’s right to exist, renounce vio-
    10 lence, and agree to accept previous agreements be-
    11 tween Israel and the Palestinians; 3

    1 (3) urges the United Nations Security Council
    2 to condemn the recent spike in Gaza-linked terrorist
    3 missile attacks against Israel, which risk causing ci-
    4 vilian casualties in both Israel and Gaza; and
    5 (4) encourages the President to continue to
    6 work diplomatically with the international commu-
    7 nity to prevent Hamas and other Gaza-based ter-
    8 rorist organizations from retaining or rebuilding the
    9 capability to launch rockets and missiles against Israel

    This morning on CSPAN's live call in show, the question posed to viewers was whether they felt optimism about their country's future. This one man who called in, was a Democrat from PA I believe. He didn not feel optimistic, and explained how our govt. has been taken over by a foreign entitiy - Zionism. The host allowed him to go on, but you should have seen his face. He LOOKED nervous and his hand remained on the box that takes calls. I thought he was going to cut him off any minute, but to his credit he let the caller finish his point. I think more people are starting to wake up about this.

    House doesn't work like the Senate, one person can't stop legislation like in the Senate. Kucinich spoke out against it on the floor.

    How do the rules in the House work then? This is what I found.

    § 5. Objecting to the Request
    Generally

    An objection to a unanimous-consent request terminates the request, even if the objecting Member attempts to subsequently withdraw the objection. Deschler Ch 23 § 45.6. Because a request for unanimous consent is in effect a request to suspend the order of business temporarily, a demand for the ‘‘regular order’’ may be made at any time while the request is being stated and requires the request to be disposed of immediately. Manual § 381; 4 Hinds § 3058.

    An objection to a unanimous-consent request may be made by any Member, including the Speaker or the chair of the Committee of the Whole.
    8 Cannon § 3383; Deschler Ch 23 §§ 42, 45.5. A Delegate may also object. Manual § 675; 6 Cannon § 241.

    When objecting to a unanimous-consent request, a Member must rise and be identified for the Congressional Record. Manual § 872; 2 Hinds § 1137. If the Chair repeats the request, the objection is properly made to the request as put by the Chair, not as put by the Member making the request. Deschler Ch 23 § 45.2.

    In the Senate, legislation is passed to Senator's offices before it's brought to the floor. Doesn't work that way in the House.

    Interesting.

    As far as the Senate goes, they don't always receive a copy of the bill as in the case of the Libya no fly zone situation:

    I'm not implying that Rand didn't get a copy of this bill but I'm guessing that Rand sees no long term benefit in opposing this resolution.

    This is the problem with incomplete stories. Ofc when you tell it like that, there is no one with a brain cells to rub together that would say Israel doesn't have that right to defend itself. But you have to understand how complex the situation is. The people inhabiting the land where is now were kicked off their lands and where told to take a hike. Some had their properties destroyed, families killed so you cannot just tell the start the story after Israel has taken the land and build over it.

    Tell the full story with the revelant parts and then re ask the question

    What exactly is wrong with the resolution? That it states that Israel has the right to defend itself?

    Right, and since the white settlers stole this land from the Native Americans, the U.S doesn't have the right to defend itself when it gets attacked.

    Israel defending themselves is in the resolution. I think you should defend yourself differently if you are trying to defend yourself from the people you stole the land from. Just imagine tomorrow, Native American rise up and demand their land back, do you think we should defend ourselves the same way as if we were being say attacked by Al Qaeda? Its the heavy handedness (and also the land stealing) that most people object to.

    I would honestly prefer to live in a country that started out ethically--and the US is certainly not that. With the treatment of the natives and the use of slaves, I think we simply have terrible karma. Israel starts out with terrorism, murder and theft, not unlike this country. They've continued it for over 60 years, just like this country--and this country will fall, just like Israel will.

    Maybe I should move to Iceland, seems like there are fewer $#@!s there.
