Another option is to apply for positions on the local citizen's advisory boards, which usually report findings/opinions to local gov't officials. Even as a non-elected member you get direct access to your local commissioners and city councils and other officials. It also can raise your profile with local politicians in preparation for your own run for office at a later date.

"We have set them on the hobby-horse of an idea about the absorption of individuality by the symbolic unit of COLLECTIVISM. They have never yet and they never will have the sense to reflect that this hobby-horse is a manifest violation of the most important law of nature, which has established from the very creation of the world one unit unlike another and precisely for the purpose of instituting individuality."- A Quote From Some Old Book

Running for local office is one of the best things you could do. Many in the liberty movement tend to pooh-pooh it because time is always running out, supposedly. It's true, in a sense, but not true enough that it doesn't help to have a stable of viable Congressional candidates 6-8 years from now who have all served a term in local/county/state office.

The frustration that many in the movement get when following local politics and sometimes even state politics is that there is less opportunity to take huge libertarian moral stances on issues. Politics at the local levels is very nuts and bolts, especially when you're talking school board, planning board, etc. It can be a very frustrating experience. But its worth it.

A term in public office at the local/state level builds a supporter and voter base, it connects you with the media and builds name recognition, it develops a campaign team for you, and it gives you vital experience on the campaign trail.

Not to mention that if you come totally out of nowhere and take a huge libertarian stance, it's hard to get respect, but if you have a resume to back it up, you're in much better shape.

I'm happy to say that here in Massachusetts, we have 5 liberty candidates this Spring (including myself), all ages 25 or younger. A terrific starting point for the future.

If you are a liberty activist in New Hampshire, please consider running for a local office. The worst of the worst Democrats will be out in force. Here is part of a letter that the chair of the Democratic Party of New Hampshire sent to Democrats in NH urging them to run for local office. The statists are scared and they are attacking us.

Yet another reason is it is important that the we have good, active Democratic candidates for local offices is to help keep Free Stater's, and their radical agenda, out of New Hampshire government. Many Free State legislators got their start in local office, often running for offices unopposed. We all know the damage Bill O'Brien did in his two years as Speaker, but did you know that the first elective office he held in New Hampshire was on his local school board?

So if you haven't yet, please consider running for local office. The filing period closes on Friday of next week, so time is short. Running for town office is a great way to start one's political career. Even Vice-President Biden got his start in local office. If you have any questions, please contact your town or county chair, or feel free to call the NHDP Office at 225-6899
