Thread: Bill Kristol admits Ron (and Rand) Paul supporters are the future of the GOP

I'd hardly call it an admission, it's more of a reluctant sigh.

As for the 1950's, I didn't mean to make a blanket statement agreeing with everything that went on during that decade. I just believe people on the whole were happier then. If you could go back in time and get rid of the racism, that would have been an ideal time. I think the break-up of families has hurt people a great deal in this country. You only have to read the stories that some of the men have posted on this forum to see how their lives and the lives of their children are affected by divorce. I also believe that the decline in the family has led to more child abuse and molestation as children are more often left without the protection of one or more of their parents. I didn't always feel this way but I have a teenage daughter and it is very sad seeing all the kids that have practically been abandoned by their parents. Many of them have no clue how to get along in the world.

I don't know if I made this clear earlier, but I don't really see that government can do anything to change this. I still have to say that I believe people were happier (and better educated) 50 or 60 years ago. Anyway, I don't want to derail this thread so I'll leave it at that.
I don't see how my having been to the US or not should affect my thinking. I flatter myself I'm quite an intelligent and thoughtful individual, if I weren't I almost certainly would not be here having a discussion with you on the Ron Paul Forum. I don't automatically believe what I see on BBC news, or Fox, CNN, MSNBC or any other news outlet I visit. I question what I see and hear, investigate, sift the evidence and come to my own conclusions. That's what I did when I saw Ron Paul being brought low by the mainstream media and hey-presto I am here. I didn't sit up all night watching those state conventions on the net because I'm uninterested and lacking in curiosity.

I understand the point you're making about life in the 1950's but saying life in the 50's would have been ideal minus the racism, homophobia and sexism is a bit like saying nuclear bombs would be ideal minus the nuclear material. It's just not the reality, however much you'd like it to be. Similarly I'm sure there are people here emotionally scarred by the divorce of their parents, and that's a terrible thing for them to have to deal with, and it is much easier to get a divorce now than it was back then, but back then parents stayed together and emotionally scarred their children by fighting all the time. Some women were beaten by their husbands back then and were forced to endure it because they had nowhere else to go and divorce was frowned upon. As for the breakdown of families leading to an increase in child abuse and molestation, that's simply not the case. Most children are abused or molested by their own parents, other family members, family friends or people known to them, often respectable seeming people in positions of authority.

And I agree, we are derailing this thread rather, so I'll leave it at that. Suffice to say I've enjoyed this exchange with you, you seem to be a very passionate and caring individual and it's good to hear how much you care about the wellbeing of your own daughter and children in general, I respect that very much.

I feel this may be an opportune moment for a

Krauthammer never fails to creep me out. I can never quite decide whether he reminds me more of a vampire or a zombie.
