    Ecuador

So, Ecuador gave Wikileak's Asange asylum. Now suppose you are Ecuador. You might give Asange asylum out of the goodness of your heart, or maybe just to rankle the bullyboy to the north (they recently threw the US military out of Ecuador). Or maybe you wanted a little peak at the secret files. Certainly you would ASK for a little peak, if not make it a term of the deal.

Now suppose you are the President of Ecuador - an economist - and you see something in the secret documents that makes little red flags go up in your head. And a couple months later, you begin a gentle repatriation of your country's gold reserves.

    Just musing . . .

Ecuador's president is a hardcore statist. He believes in government control of the press and the economy.

Not suggesting he is anything but a typical tyrant out for his own interests. BUT he is a tyrant with some new high level inside information. And now he wants his country's gold in hand rather than in a foreign bank vault. Why?

    +1 Rep, but...
What world leader doesn't already know the USA is totally broke and/or low on gold reserves?
No one here wanted to be the Billionaire.

Agreed. But what is NOT known by most, and really only speculated by some, is that the world's gold supply is no longer where some of its owners think it is and that the amount of real gold in the world is dramatically less - perhaps orders of magnitude less - than what appears to exist on paper due to massive re-hypothecation and that when push comes to shove, lots of people and countries who think they own some gold are going to end up empty handed or with the sad consolation prized of being paid off in paper money.
