Peres lauds Bulgarian president's visit to Israel as 'best response' to terror

President Shimon Peres on Monday welcomed his Bulgarian counterpart, President Rosen Asenov Plevneliev to Israel, calling the visit the best response to terror attacks, and to extremism in the Middle East in general.

"Bulgaria is a true friend of Israel, that stood up to save the Jewish people 70 years ago in Europe, and who stood by [us] throughout the terror attack that took place in Burgas last July," Peres said, at an official reception held in the morning for the Bulgarian president.

On July 18, a suicide bomber struck an Israeli tour bus at the Burgas airport in Bulgaria, killing seven people and wounding 33. The attack took place on the 18th anniversary of a terror attack on a Jewish community center in Buenos Aires.

Peres added that joint ministerial meetings and strengthening of collaboration in areas of foreign policy and defense are the best way to deal with terrorism and extremism, according to a statement released by the president's spokesperson.

Bulgaria, Israel to Boost Security, Business Cooperation

Bulgaria and Israel are committed to deepening their common work in security matters and business, stated Bulgarian President Rosen Plevneliev and Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu.

The two met Tuesday, during the the second day of Plevneliev's official state visit to Israel and Palestine.

"Bulgaria is a true and long-time friend of Israel. Strong and warm ties exist between our peoples," said Israeli PM Netanyahu.

He added that these relations date back from the Second World War, when many Bulgarians did all they can to rescue Jews from the hands of the Nazis.

Netanyahu further thanked Bulgaria for its "swift reaction and professionalism" in dealing with the July 18 terror attack in Burgas that claimed the lives of 5 Israeli tourists.

The two leaders vowed to deepen their countries' cooperation in the field of security to prevent any such future tragic events.

On his part, the Bulgarian President drew attention towards opportunities for Israeli companies to do business and invest in Bulgaria.

"Bulgaria can be attractive to foreign investors with its financial and economic stability, the access it gives to the EU's common market, with its low taxes and qualified workers," said Plevneliev.

The two leaders further discussed plans for the upcoming commemoration of the 70th anniversary of the rescue of Bulgaria's Jews.

After the meeting with Netanyahu, Plevneliev's Israeli visit also includes a meeting with the Bulgarian community in Israel.

Israel Continues to Pressure Bulgaria to Blame Iran for Burgas Terror

Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu has restated his country's position that Iran is behind the July 18 anti-Israeli terror attack in Bulgaria, at a press conference with Bulgarian President Rosen Plevneliev Tuesday.

"We are in the midst of a heavy struggle with the global network of terror organized by Iran. The July 18 attack in Bulgaria is but an example," said Netanyahu after meeting Plevneliev, who is on an official state visit to Israel.

Israeli leaders reacted swiftly to the tragic events in Burgas, in which a bomb planted in a tourist bus killed 5 Israeli tourists, the Bulgarian driver, and the presumed suicide bomber, by saying that the attack has been organized by Hezbollah and Iran.

During a string of bilateral Bulgarian-Israeli government meetings following the attack, high-ranking Israeli statesmen have unswervingly made a case of restating that position.

On their part, Bulgarian authorities have this far refused to cast the blame on any party, saying that full investigations have to be completed beforehand.

Tuesday Israeli PM Netanyahu thanked Bulgaria for its efforts in investigating the case, but stated that Israel expects the final results to be ready "within very short time."
