I think there's 2 important things when buying gold or silver. One is to make sure you are only paying around 5% above the spot price, don't buy anything that's marked up because it's collectible. Two is to buy something made by a recognizable mint so that everybody knows it's really gold or silver and the weight is correct.

I bought 1 ounce Canadian Maple Leafs from Euro Pac Precious Metals and have no complaints.
