CORNAR: Looking Around Corners using Femto-Photography

The seemingly impossible task of recording what is beyond the line of sight is possible due to ultra‐fast imaging. A new form of photography, Femto-photography exploits the finite speed of light and analyzes 'echoes of light'.

We have built a camera that can look around corners and beyond the line of sight. The camera uses light that travels from the object to the camera indirectly, by reflecting off walls or other obstacles, to reconstruct a 3D shape.

Privacy is indeed under attack in the worst way, but I wouldn't worry about this particular gee-whiz trick too much. It's not like the state's goons are going to be dragging this incredibly expensive, bulky equipment around with them and looking around every corner just in case someone happens to be concealed behind it. If they're looking around the corner with this, then most likely they already know someone or something is there.

Besides, there has to a sufficiently-reflective wall in place for the laser to bounce off. In fact, it would probably be easier for them to have a tiny camera mounted on a fiber optic cable and snake that around the corner to see what's there. This laser trick seems like a fancy solution in search of a problem.

It depends on what the innovation is being used for. Over the last ten years, a huge amount of R&D has gone directly into looking for new high-tech ways to destroy privacy and, consequently, freedom.
