Default Egypt: Christian teen gets three years in jail for offensive Mohammed drawing on Facebook

I still remember when Obama (and most of the posters on RPF) were cheering the downfall of Mubarak. I know a number of Copts here in the US and they cheered it too - now they wish things would go back to the way they were. "The devil you know..."

An Egyptian court has sentenced this week a 17-year-old Coptic student to three years in jail for posting drawings of the prophet Muhammad on his Facebook profile in Dec. 2011. The court ruled that the images were offensive to Islam and mocked the prophet.

"Assiut child's court ordered the jailing of Gamal Abdou Massoud ... for three years after he insulted Islam and published and distributed pictures that insulted Islam and its Prophet," a statement issued by the court read, as reported by Reuters.

The images appeared on Massoud's Facebook page in December of last year, and caused riots and attacks on Coptic Christians in his hometown of Assuit, in southern Egypt.

Villagers attacked Massoud's home as well as the homes of other Christians, and security and military forces were reportedly dispersed across Massoud's hometown to prevent further vandalism, firing tear gas at the Muslim protesters.

Several Christian homes were burned during the attacks, and several Christians were injured.

Massoud was also accused of distributing the images to some of his school friends. The teen argued that he did not upload the offensive drawings onto his Facebook account, but rather they were posted without his knowledge.

Such a view smells of arrogance or racist supremacism. What gives you or anyone the right to deny the Egyptian or any people in the world right for self determination and telling them that a dictator that is puppet of foreign masters is best for them? Torture guru of Egypt and puppet dictator Mubarik was protecting interests of foreign masters and enabling Israeli oppression of Palestinian teens, children and adults. In a way he shared responsibility for causes that led to 9/11 and resulting economic/liberty collapse in America. No sympathy for that dictator.

Btw did you also call for keeping Saddam in power in Iraq since his fall led to killing/exile of millions of arab race Christians? Or because dictator Saddam was anti-Israel, plight for arab Christians of Iraq resulting from his fall was acceptable?

Or do you call for regime change in Austria because of their anti freedom of speech laws like this?

Default Egypt has not been secular for decades

    BlackTerell

THIS WAS ILLEGAL BEFORE THE REVOLUTION.

These laws are not new ones and I don't think they will be repealed anytime soon. Egypt is not going to become a liberaldemocracy overnight, especially since there's been a reversal of the renaissance that happened in the 19th century,
because Mubarak and his predecessors destroyed or limited all democratic institutions. Also, the main part of persecution of christians comes from salafist and it also came from Mubarak. The salafist have their origin in Saudiarabia and have
been growing in the muslim world for the last three to four decades, and if americans would have known what the saudis have been doing the last 40 years, they would have understood that the world needs to get off oil, not just middeast oil as some american politicians say.

We are not to long behind that, people often get fired for what they say on Facebook. The nature of the service, however, is that you must forfeit your penumbra right of privacy- which is really just the right to protect your privacy.

Egyptians: This Revolution Was a Curse

    New York Times, MSN
    June 10, 2011

    =====

    Flashback:

    The Egyptian Revolution
The problem with the Egyptian Revolution, which is being acted out in the streets of Cairo and Alexandria with huge demonstrations, is that no one knows what the revolutionaries want.

Fanning the Flames of Revolution in Egypt
As Mubarak's Egypt succumbs to revolution, little is none of the forces fueling the protest, such as the Muslim Brotherhood, but moreso the role of the Communist Party of Egypt in revolution's inception and current activities - thus revealing an Islamo-Communist connection.

    Turmoil in Egypt
It’s much too early to say what will be the outcome of the present popular uprising in Egypt against Mubarak’s dictatorship, but there are several scenarios that can be analyzed as possible outcomes.

    Egypt's Present Path
Though much of the world waits with bated breath to see what type of government Egypt will end up with, the shape of Egypt's government is almost a foregone conclusion.

    Egypt's Problem of Leadership
Egypt faces a problem of leadership: Will the nation find a new dictator to replace Mubarak, or will free the people by insisting upon constitutional changes that will chain the government?

    Egypt: Did Anything Important Happen?
When the Los Angeles Times confirmed that protests that started in January in Tunisia and then moved to Egypt were spreading to Algeria, Bahrain, Libya, Morocco, Cameroon and Kuwait, many concluded that they were driven by unhappy citizens connected via the internet.

I can't stand hyperbole of this nature. There is an infinitely wide chasm between:

    1. Getting fired for calling your boss an asshole on your public Facebook.

    2. Having riots, homes burned down, and a three year jail sentence for a 17 year old kid because of a drawing of a religious figure.

Here is more information on a few cases before the revolution:

There are more cases than these, I presume, since Egypt has been known for this before the revolution.
