Thread: HR 3523 CISPA (the return of SOPA)

HR 3523 CISPA (the return of SOPA)

Basically this is a bill that violates every privacy law ever and lets the government or a corporation or a political party snoop on secure electronic communications (email, facebook posts, etc) on the suspicion of cybersecurity breaches.

Total crock of $#@!. Haven't read through the bill yet though, so I'll update this post when I do.

Angry SOPA changes name to CISPA

The latest attempt by Congress to try to regulate and control the Internet is no longer known as SOPA but CISPA: the Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act. The SOPA-like bill would give companies the power to collect information on their subscribers and hand it over to the government and all they have to do is request it. Kendall Burman, senior national security fellow for the Center for Democracy and Technology, joins Liz Wahl to talk about what this means for online freedoms.

You are so correct. Something that has definitely stuck out to me as I have followed politics more closely is that those who want to rule over others are tireless in their efforts to do so. When we are able to defeat them it is never safe to assume that the issue is "resolved", because they inevitably just come at it another way.

After reading and studying the bill, it's not as cut-and-dry as the EFF/other sources are making it seem, however the implications are still there for what they're saying.

    Basically, the bill allows:

    * The government to share intelligence with private cybersecurity companies, bypassing all laws of privacy and disclosure.
    * Private cybersecurity companies to share intelligence with the government, bypassing all laws of privacy and disclosure.

Information is classified as "‘‘(A) efforts to degrade, disrupt, or destroy such system or network; or theft or misappropriation of private or government information, intellectual property, or personally identifiable information.". Anonymous plots to DDos a server, Wikileaks as a whole (the misappropriation part), and anything regarding internet piracy all fit into this.

    * Not only is all of this information exempt from disclosure at the federal, state, or local levels; but it's also exempt from legal liability. If information of a private internet nature is used against you, you can't sue the company/government agency that obtained it.

Major online corporations like facebook or twitter or youtube that employ cybersecurity companies could have *all* of their information sent to the government without any regard for privacy or disclosure. There's no strict definition of what information they send, which is very important -- because it means they could send an entire database dump of tons of secure information to the government because of *one* instance of, say, someone posting a youtube video of copyrighted content. And they would do so without consulting the company they're working for or authorities or anything. And the information the government gleans from the rest of that content can be used against you and you cannot sue them for obtaining it.

Worse, let's consider the Protecting Children from Internet Pornographers bill. With this bill (PCIP), ISP's are required to store subscriber information for a year, including IP addresses and history. The government is also capable of gathering that information with or without probable cause, which under CISPA they can then share with the cybersecurity private sector and be exempt from disclosure and legal liability.

    tl;dr this bill is bull$#@!.

Ah. There she is, as expected of course.

But then again, what the hell else would you do with that big ass desert base they're building for spying in the name of security.

  12. #10
Yeah hahaah I was thinking about that too. Let's think, like, not only can web corporations like facebook and google share information with the fedgov, but so can server hosting companies (and they usually have a big motivation towards cybersecurity). Maybe it would be easier for those companies to simply pass all the information along to the Ministry of Truth they're building in Utah and let *them* decipher it rather than trying to track everything themselves.

    The implications are pretty extreme.

    I posted this already: http://www.ronpaulforums.com/showthr...urn-of-SOPA%29

Two things are wrong with your statement:

    * The only companies that can pass that information on are cybersecurity companies (they have to actually specialize in that field), however if a cybersecurity company works for, say, facebook it amounts to the same thing.
    * The government doesn't have to request the information; the cybersecurity company is free to share the information with the DoD/NSA at any time without need for pesky things like privacy and disclosure laws.

Have they already forgotten their winning formula with the Patriot Act?

They just need to call this act "Internet Freedom Act" and BAM, passed

    USUAL SUSPECTS

I always tried to tell people this Congressman was very dangerous... This guy lied to Americans numerous times with his operations around the globe. He is the head of the POLICE STATE. He's also the one that pushed for funding the assassinations of the Qaddafi regime because of; Chemical Weapons, Terrorism, and of course, the 1st line of all foreign spending, "A threat to Israel'.
