There was a guy in my area that filled this small valley with old tires, and he wanted to use them to fire en electricity generating plant. They would never let him do it because of fear of pollution from burning tires. Of course it would have been a new plant with the latest scrubbing technology, but no, can't do that. Of course, what eventually happens to a huge pile of tires in a hot, arid valley? They caught fire, and it burned for months, spewing out quite a sooty mess. It actually rained black a few times over the Bay Area. Fear of a controlled incineration led to the worst case scenario. The world didn't end.

That's true! That's why ships are sent to the poorest nations like Bangladesh for scrapping, where the poor go to work manually tearing it apart with no protective gear at all, usually in their bare feet, in contact with all sorts of toxic chemicals and dangerous things.
