Tried posting this a couple of days ago, but kept getting "need a token" messages. Guess it was auto-saved! This past summer, at a straw poll vote in NH, it got some GOP women thinking when I told them about a mayor being elected with 70% of the vote to keep the US military from building a helo port off their coast. Then the US military pressured the Japanese PM to tell them, "Sorry. It's coming whether you like it or not." There are reasons the people are not keen on having the military around...anybody/s military.

Close to a third of the Okinawan civilian population was killed in the battle of Okinawa. The Himeyuri Girls' School was commandeered by the Japanese Army and the girls were forced to care for the wounded and fetch water and things from the outside. They were told that it was best to die if the Americans won since they would be abused. They were very surprised when they were not killed when captured.
