John Birch Society Wants UN agenda 21 out of Nashua, New Hampshire

Local members of the conservative John Birch Society handed out flyers in front of City Hall on Saturday as part of their effort to get rid of Nashua’s affiliation with the International Council on Local Environmental Initiatives.

Nashua resident Leif Parsell, 28, said the group was fighting for local property rights, which are under attack by ICLEI and its promotion of the United Nations’ Agenda 21 for sustainable development.

HB 1634: Stop Agenda 21 and ICLEI in New Hampshire

On Friday, January 20, 2012, House Bill 1634 was introduced, read, and referred in the New Hampshire State Legislature. Bill HB 1634 would prohibit the state, counties, towns, and cities from implementing programs of, expending money for, receiving funding from, or contracting with the International Council for Local Environmental Initiatives (ICLEI), also known as ICLEI -- Local Governments for Sustainability.

ICLEI was founded in 1990, as the ‘International Council for Local Environmental Initiatives,’ at the World Congress of Local Governments for a Sustainable Future, held at the United Nations in New York City. According to its website, ICLEI describes itself as “an association of over 1220 local government Members who are committed to sustainable development.” Spanning over “70 different countries and representing more than 569,885,000 people,” ICLEI facilitates local governments in the implementation of United Nations' Agenda 21.

The United Nations’ Agenda 21 was the name given to the UN’s official program on ‘sustainable development’ that was first unveiled, as a 1,000 page report, at the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED), also known as the Earth Summit, held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on June 3-14, 1992.

Maurice Strong, the Secretary-General of the United Nations 1992 Earth Summit had this to say about sustainable development: “Current lifestyles and consumption patterns of the affluent middle class — involving high meat intake, use of fossil fuels, appliances, home and work air conditioning, and suburban housing — are not sustainable.”

Since Agenda 21 was not an official treaty it did not require ratification by the U.S. Senate and has instead penetrated the American heartland and coastal regions through the aforementioned ICLEI organization.

Agenda 21 supports a communitarian/communist policy of wealth distribution and the erosion of private property rights in order to achieve what it calls the preservation of “open space.”

The reason for this disregard for private property rights is due to the United Nation’s view on private property. According to “Section 11.2.3.1.3 Property rights and the use of biological resources” of Global Biodiversity Assessment (1996), published for the United Nations Environment Programme: “Property rights are not absolute and unchanging, but rather a complex, dynamic and shifting relationship between two or more parties, over space and time.”

This interpretation of property rights is a far cry from the Founding Fathers. President George Washington said, “Private property and freedom are inseparable.” His successor, President John Adams said, “The moment the idea is admitted into society that property is not as sacred as the law of God, and that there is not a force of law and public justice to protect it, anarchy and tyranny commence.”

If Agenda 21 is fully implemented it will eventually terminate your right to own property; and once that fundamental right is lost tyranny is able to flourish. Your ability to live the lifestyle you desire, your freedom to pursue and reach the American dream of owning a large home and raising a family, and the means to travel as you see fit are all at jeopardy so long as your local government adheres to the principles and protocols of Agenda 21 and sustainable development.

Sustainable development sounds responsible, yet attach it to a foreign entity trying to impose its environmental regulations on your city or town, and it’s anything but responsible. This tri-fold pamphlet offers a general overview of the United Nations Agenda 21 and how it is usurping local control by imposing restrictions on your family and local community. A great tool to initiate a conversation on Agenda 21. Also incorporates the 3-click challenge! (2011)

Unfortunately, while the NH House supported a bill to prevent Agenda 21 in NH, the NH Senate wouldn't have it. Here is how a pro-liberty state rep described what happened in NH.

    NH introduced [HB1634
http://www.nhliberty.org/bills/view/2012/HB1634 ] a similar bill [to the Alabama bill]. It did not contain the "due process" portion that is in the Alabama bill, but I think that is less of an issue. The Agenda 21 approach is to provide "advice" and funding to local governments, which then adopt the agenda - but using the proper channels. Any attempts to circumvent due process should already be covered by NH law.

As Alabama also did, we attempted to restrict funding.

Unfortunately the bill and concept were killed. In its first iteration, the House transformed it from a ban into a study committee. Then the study committee itself was killed, although primarily due to the time lines involved rather than the subject.

The House then resurrected the original concept - the ban on funding - by attaching it to a Senate bill. This time it passed the House, but was killed by the Senate.

On the bright side, there are 3 upcoming Agenda 21 related events in NH.

Rosa Koire, founder of the Post Sustainability Institute, will speak on the dangers of the UN's Agenda 21.
