Amount = supply. A asteroid off in space does not exist economically right now. It's not doing anything, it's not relevant, it doesn't exist. I spend a lot of money and launch an expedition. I set up camp there and start mining noble metals. Now it exists. I just increased the amount of natural resources at humanity's disposal.
