Being selected as McCain's VP put Sarah Palin into the national conversation, and had she chosen to run, would start out as the front-runner. And no sensible person ties her to McCain's policies, they understand McCain selected her to appeal to the right and to women voters.
If Rand were selected as VP nominee, and Romney lost, Rand would be the prohibitive favorite going into 2016.
If Romney won, there is a good chance of a 50/50 split in the Senate and Rand would have the tie breaking vote for anything that split on party lines.
