Also, I couldn't believe one of Newt's answers. He was trying to pander to Ron Paul and libertarians saying something like that government growth is inevitable and government is force. This coming from the same guy that wanted to execute drug dealers and is a huge proponent of big government...
I recognized that as well! Kind of annoying. At the same time, you have to realize Newt doesn't know what he's talking about. He doesn't actually understand the philosophy behind the rhetoric that he steals from Ron and other people. If he did, he'd be a libertarian, but we all know he isn't. It's easy to sort out a real libertarian from a pretender: a real libertarian understands the principle of non-aggression and can articulate that position.

That is a potentially dangerous thought process. Never underestimate these people. They are not stupid, and they do understand the ideas. They don't like the ideas because it is harder for them to exploit. Don't make the mistake of thinking they don't get it. Newt is a very intelligent person, he is just also a very evil one.

It was definitely pandering, but he made this point directly after Paul made a statement, so it kinda looked like he was agreeing with Paul/following his lead. It gives Paul more credibility with the Gingrich base.

I need Santorum's highlights, or the original debate for download.

For me, the best part was when he compared outlawing birth control use with gun control. Basically, said you can't make people any less immoral by forbidding birth control pills anymore than you can make people stop killing each other by forbidding guns. I think that has the potential to really appeal to the far right and chip away at some of Santorum's support. Plus, this did a good job of making himself look socially conservative without giving up liberties.
