I'd like to know - WHO made the decision to publicize the fact that the books had been burned in the first place?
Why was this necessary? Couldn't they have just removed them and left it at that? Surely they know by now that advertising anything that could be construed as negative toward muslims is likely to set off a reaction from them. It's as though they wanted to provoke this -or- are not giving us the real story!

Nation Building ... We're doing it through the use of force, and that's the problem.
We should have left that area years ago.
Let them keep thinking Ron Paul supporters are just a little army. Every military strategy manual in the world has examples of the bad things that happen to arrogant commanders of massive armies that underestimate the enemy. They all lose. We will win because the human heart, despite its detractors, is meant for truth and freedom.

We hired local Afghanistan citizens to clean up around the base apparently and they found the burned copies in a fire pit. They were outraged and immediately told their friends and family.

My understanding of the facts are this:

The Koran’s in question where being used by prisoners to write in and send notes back in forth. And my understanding of Mulsim beliefs is that by writing in a Koran you are in fact desecrating it.

The Qurans were among religious materials removed from a detainee facility at Bagram Airfield. The materials were gathered for disposal and were inadvertently given to troops for burning, Gen. John Allen, commander of NATO’s International Security Assistance Force, said Tuesday.“This was not a decision that was made because they were religious materials,” he said. “It was not a decision that was made with respect to the faith of Islam. It was a mistake. It was an error. The moment we found out about it, we immediately stopped and we intervened.”A military official said the materials were removed from the detainee center’s library because they had “extremist inscriptions” on them and there was “an appearance that these documents were being used to facilitate extremist communications.”
There are only several ways to properly dispose of a Koran appropriately:

    (1) Wrapping it in a pure piece of cloth and burying it respectfully in a place
where people (normally) do not walk about In cold climate countries (such as the
UK), one may dig a Shiq grave, but a slab should be placed first and over it the
    soil.

    (2) Fastening the Qur'an with a heavy object like a stone and then placing it
    respectfully in flowing water.

If one is able to implement the above two methods, it would not be permitted to
burn the copy of the Qur'an. However, if the above two methods are difficult to
carry out, then one may burn the Qur'an and bury or drown the resulting ash.
