In my town they closed a lane on a busy street to put in toll parking. traffic is horrible on that part of the street. the toll goes to the city and is right next to a private parking garage.
after watching this video, I now realize my city could have done worse. the tolls could be going to another country.

I don't see what's wrong with a foreign corporation building, owning or operating infrastructure. It's not like they can pack up a highway and send it to china...
They can forbid you on their toll road or make it so expensive you cannot afford to drive on it, this also applies to toll bridges as well. Our tax dollars are supposed to pay for the roads, so we are told, by registration our vehicles with the state.Originally Posted by eduardo89

If they make their toll road or bridge so expensive they wouldn't be able to cover their capital costs because no one would use it. An American company could do it just as a foreign company could.

They are doing the same thing in California. Leave it to government to screw up a free-market concept. By taking existing lanes and converting them to Toll Lanes, they are reducing options, not increasing competition.
We are in the fast lane to a two-tiered society. Maybe they should change the names to "Elite" and "Mundane" lanes.

You're absolutely right, in a crony capitalistic society where government regulates business against average citizens but not their crony buddies, the citizens are beholden to them. In a truly free society there would be competition and the people would be the regulators--not government. If a company charges too much for a road or a bridge and people stopped using those routes then they would either lower the charge or simply go out of business.
One of the very reasons our country went to war with Great Britain--King George III treated the American land as his own to give to whomever he pleased and allowed whoever to do business, and the colonist were not free to have a business that would compete against King George III or a business he simply did not approve.
