[SIGPIC][/SIGPIC] "It is from numberless diverse acts of courage and belief that human history is shaped. Each time a person stands up for an ideal, or acts to improve the lot of others, or strikes out against injustice, he sends forth a tiny ripple of hope, and crossing each other from a million different centers of energy and daring, those ripples build a current which can sweep down the mightiest walls of oppression and resistance." Robert Kennedy

...[T]he several States composing, the United States of America, are not united on the principle of unlimited submission to their general government...[T]he government created by this compact was not made the exclusive or final judge of the extent of the powers delegated to itself; since that would have made its discretion, and not the Constitution, the measure of its powers...

Good read. One question I have; why did they make a new law in 1866 to determine how Senators are selected?

Given the amount of states suing over Obamacare, I doubt that it would have passed if without the 17th amendment.

Government schools teach about 'balance of power' as if that means the three branches of the Federal Government. However, the big 'check and balance' was the state. This 17th amendment eliminated a huge tool the states had to 'check' the federal government's power.
