For the newbies - Ron Paul on the Civil War and slavery

This was an issue Ron Paul was attacked on in 2008. It has not come up this election cycle other than Huntsman's attack ad. If you are not familiar with his position it is basically that Ron Paul believes that the civil war was an unnecessary war that cost the lives of 600,000 America lives.

Ron Paul suggests that the government should have purchased all the slaves from the owners and set them free. He cites that this was the actions of other countries that took this approach to end slavery in their countries. Abraham Lincoln in a letter to congress even suggested the same prior to the civil war.

slavery would have died naturally so Dr. Paul is right. Look to Brazil. Society was becoming more and more industrial and slavery was going to fade regardless. The war did accomplish a very good goal, but it was probably unnecessary and cost millions of lives and led to southern blowback against the newly freed slaves, and northerners for that matter.

Anybody interested in the topic should read 'The Real Lincoln: A New Look at Abraham Lincoln, His Agenda, and an Unnecessary War' by Thomas J. DiLorenzo (pretty sure the author is a libertarian).

The funny thing is...while this would be a political liability in most states (which is stupid) the one state where this issue could actually really help me is South Carolina...the next election where Paul has been hurting in the polls. Interesting to see if this comes out.

Wasn't slavery against the 5th Amend.?

"nor be deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law"

Well yes, but the central assumption was that blacks weren't proper people. There were three parts of the constitution that recognised slavery initially.

once again we discover that we are again debating that nagging & ignoble 2/5th of a person thingie the North tolerated that made its way into our Constitution...

Dr. Paul is correct, it was also an unconstitutional war. The Confederacy had the right to succeed from the Union under the constitution. Lincoln should have left it alone...

Yes, but in the eyes of the south...black people didn't count as actual people. So the constitution did not apply to them.
