Thumbs down Newt criticizes Ron's economic plan

    ...

DAVENPORT, Iowa -- Republican presidential hopeful Newt Gingrich on Monday called rival Ron Paul's plan to cut $1 trillion from the federal budget in one year impractical, likening it to amputating a limb.

He also said two other GOP hopefuls behaved like kids on a playground during a recent debate.

Gingrich, who was in Davenport as part of a swing through eastern Iowa, touted his plan to create jobs by cutting regulations and reshaping the federal tax code. But he also dismissed Paul's plan to slice off nearly a quarter of the federal budget in a single year.

"I doubt very much you could cut a trillion dollars in one year," Gingrich told a questioner, recalling a conversation he had with former Budget Director David Stockman about the pace of budget cuts.

"I said to him, ‘If you come to me and tell me I need to lose 30 pounds and you have a diet, I'll certainly consider it. If you come to me and tell me I need to lose 30 pounds and you're going to amputate my right leg, I think it's a non-starter,'" he said.

Yeah Newt, and if a doctor told you he had to cut off your gangrenous leg in order to save your life, would it still be a non-starter?

A big gov't guy not wanting to actually cut spending? I'm shocked.

  9. #8
He criticized Paul Ryan's plan too. Basically any plan that lays out specific sacrifices that are tough, but necessary, he opposes. His alternative is a "plan" that does nothing but offer empty platitudes like how he's going to "modernize the government" and "reduce waste". He's banking on the Republicans being as stupid as the Dems were when they elected empty suit Obama. Probably a smart gamble.

Yeah Newt we wouldn't want any right wing engineering for slashing the budget.

No one was expecting him to praise Ron. I was posting the story.

That wasn't directed at you, it was preemptive towards the people who are going to be very upset about this when, in fact, it's not worth being upset over.

Good point. Like a lot of politicians, Newt apparently thinks little changes are somehow going to save us. He doesn't realize the severity of the crisis we're facing.

If Newt wants to lose 30 pounds, there are better places to start than his leg.

I don't think anyone will be butthurt over Newt. Who had hopes for him? If this was Palin however, this forum would be flooded in tears.

We all know how much of an establishment wh(censored)re he is. Expect big government to thrive under him.

lol, exactly, this is a compliment.

It's not attacking Ron's plan; it validates it and elevates Ron as the true threat he is. It also brings Ron's budget awesomeness to the table.

Good point. What are fiscal conservatives going to say when Newt--the "establishment's conservative" himself--is being averse to fiscal conservativism???

  26. #23
Government grew every year under Newt in charge. He is such a fake fiscal conservative and status quo candidate.

    Nuff said!
If Rand does not win the Republican nomination, he should buck the controlled two party system and run as an Independent for President in 2016 and give Americans a real option to vote for.

We are all born libertarians then something goes really wrong. Despite this truth, most people are still libertarians yet not know it.

Perfect! I hope this gets a bit of play in the media.

I love Paul getting attacked for wanting to cut spending.

hes keeping on the message of cutting off limbs and shooting heads and such thats what gets laughs at the debates so it must be good policy as well.

No Newt, I think it is more akin to cutting the rope on a boat anchor.

Boehner and the Republicans have been taking heat for not cutting enough. Newt's argument is a losing proposition. The fired up GOP base wants BIG CUTS NOW.

Mr. 'I love the individual health insurance mandate' and 'I love global warming regulations' criticizes Ron's plan?

    Say it isn't so!

    --
seriously, he criticized RYAN's plan as draconian, and it INCREASED spending, and wouldn't have balanced for 20 years even under its own generous projections. What did anyone expect?

Actually all Ron has to do is find a way to cut 300 billion. The first 700 billion comes immediately from ending the overseas empire which he can do all on his own.

  34. #30
The only candidate who could accomplish such cuts would be ron because if congress didn't approve ron would simply shut the govt down and save even more money. And they all know it.
