A hacker group calling itself TurkGuvenligi has declared September 4th, 2011 World Hacker Day.

The extent of the cyber attack has not been determined as reports of other downed sites continue.

Attacks appear to be DNS redirections.

Liberty is lost through complacency and a subservient mindset. When we accept or even welcome automobile checkpoints, random searches, mandatory identification cards, and paramilitary police in our streets, we have lost a vital part of our American heritage. America was born of protest, revolution, and mistrust of government. Subservient societies neither maintain nor deserve freedom for long.

Those sites (vodafone.com, theregister.co.uk, acer.com, betfair.com, nationalgeographic.com and telegraph.co.uk) were all using Netnames as their DNS provider which has a web front end that stores the records in an SQL database. It appears that was vulnerable and they were able to to do an SQL injection to change the records.
