Unfortunately it's done all the time and you are right it is a high risk mission. A chinook is the best performing aircraft at altitude so this is a very big factor on why they are used in Afganistan. Chinooks were used in air assualt missions in Iraq as well. They just took out the largest target as I am sure there was a whole assortment of other aircraft on the mission.
