We don't invade countries that act as good little agents in the War on Terror (Libya never cooperated).

We've been using Syria for rendition for nearly a decade. Most notable case would be that of Canadian Maher Arar. Arar was rendered from NYC to Syria, held for months, questioned by US forces, before finally being released after a year of captivity. Canada has since apologized for its role and compensated him monetarily. The US government has invoked the "State's secrets privilege" and had his case against Ashcroft dismissed on national security grounds by a circuit court. The supreme court has refused to hear the case.

Summary, as long as despots help the US government make people disappear they can kill as many of their own people as they want.

Now thier navy is shelling cities.

AMMAN (Reuters) - Syrian tanks and navy ships shelled the main Mediterranean port city of Latakia Sunday, residents and rights groups said, killing 24 people as President Bashar al-Assad's forces launched an offensive by land and sea to crush protests against his rule.

Since the beginning of the fasting month of Ramadan on August 1, Assad's forces have stormed major urban centers and outlying regions where protests demanding political freedom and an end to 41 years of Assad family rule have been attracting crowds in larger numbers, human rights campaigners said.

Place your bets! When will the cruise missles fly? Just in time for the prez to gain support for 2012.

The last time Obama told a leader, ahemmm, Qaddafi, to step down, we started dropping bombs soon thereafter. Hey, as long as we can keep printing the green, why not start another incursion. It's there idea of stimulating the economy probably. Kinda like their idea that welfare and food stamps will create jobs and stimulate the economy. Just crazy. Like Ron Paul like to say, " It just baffles me "

With new polls that have Obummer ratings in the gutter I'll bet we start bombing by the end of August just before the 10th anniversary of September 11th.

US President Barack Obama and European leaders condemned a crackdown Sunday by Syrian forces, which activists said killed nearly 140 people, and vowed to increase pressure on the regime.

Italy's Foreign Minister Franco Frattini also called for an urgent meeting of the UN Security Council, while the European Union denounced the timing of the violence coming on the eve of the holy month of Ramadan.

"I am appalled by the Syrian government's use of violence and brutality against its own people," Obama said in a statement.

The UN Security concil is involved. This smells like Lybia the sequel. And just think, with a debt limit sure to be raised we'll have the funds to drop more bombs. WEE!
Now according to the article, Assad wont be dealt with because he is better connected than Quadaffi was? WTF !

    http://news.yahoo.com/why-syria-wont...230500155.html

Notwithstanding the assault on Syria's opposition, there are differences: U.N. envoy Kofi Annan flew to Damascus last week to discuss possible negotiations with Assad. "Gaddafi had no powerful friends and was isolated in a way that Bashar al-Assad, for example, is not," says the RUSI report. And so far those friends are standing by their mana leader who now has other weapons at hand.

So, the UN can deal with Assad but not Quadaffi. Guess the death toll used as the pretext to bomb Lybia becomes a double standard when it comes to Syria?

Meanwhile, heavy fighting continues in Syria.

    http://sg.news.yahoo.com/heavy-fight...040001367.html

World powers have been unable to stop more than a year of bloodshed in Syria, a country that sits on the fault lines of several regional and ethnic conflicts. Recent army gains against rebel positions have shown no sign of quelling the violence and no negotiated settlement is in sight.

The United Nations says more than 8,000 people have been killed and humanitarian conditions are grim. The government says about 2,000 members of security forces have been killed.
